I don't really see a difference in either quality, size and weight? Larger and higher quality is always better, but you're right to point out that pictures have a storage and bandwidth cost. If you're concerned about it you can feed your works through FileOptimizer to optimize them, I've been using it for a while now and it's especially powerful on .png.

I think your problem's more due to filename - I'm guessing that your source file are jpgs, and you're saving the end product as a png? Since png files use lossless compression they really aren't suited to image with a lot of colours like photos, and the artifacts from the previous lossy jpg compression makes that worse; saving as png if this is the case doesn't really do more than balloon the filesize.

I'd probably recommend saving as jpg if your source image is also a jpg - if you're worried about lossy compression you can save it as high quality as you can and it'll still be smaller than a png probably, the extra compression usually isn't noticeable either.
