If memory serves, the first NieR game did have a pair of female android sisters, but for all respects they were GINO. That said, given that the latest game, Automata is going to have a heavy focus on androids, robots and such, I'm hoping that's going to be different.

The latest trailer for NieR: Automata seems to confirm that the main character will get damaged at some point, so at least we know she's not a GINO.

Yeah, I played the demo back when it first came out. One of the nice little touches I liked about it was you get "skillchips" that you can stick into 2B (the character you play as) and there's one specifically marked as her OS, with a description that removing it would result in the android's death. So, guess what I did as soon as I read that?
Yeah, it took me back to the title screen. I assume I killed her.
