Live-Action Richie Rich coming to Netflix

Post by dean86 » Sat Feb 07, 2015 8:11 pm

...and they've totally re-imagined Irona the Robot Maid:

Here's an interview with the actress BROOKE WEXLER describing the role:

It arrives on Netflix FEBRUARY 20th :)

Well...I'm not sure I'd use that word in relation to this.

Nevertheless, I am inordinately interested to see something that looks so incredibly stupid.

The article above has an earlier debut date.
Debuting Feb. 12, 2015 on Netflix
It's more recently written than the article from October.

I was more interested in the aesthetically pleasing actress they chose rather than the content of the show.

Another good thing is that if there is any good content, we won't have to wait long to see it. Knowing Netflix, they will be releasing all 21 episodes on day one.

This whole NEW Richie Rich show, I'd love to see how THIS one turns out.

And ME, without a Netflix account... :(

It pretty much looks like any other tween series on Disney Channel or Nickelodeon. Also, didn't Richie have TWO parents, and both were wealthy themselves?

Having said that, if they ever, EVER do a crossover with Wendy the Witch or Casper the Friendly Ghost, I am in SO HARD.

This new show seems to be almost a vanity press exercise–an entirely new series about a super-rich kid, with an entirely new supporting cast and concept; using ersatz Richie and Irona as the leads only to give it some linkage to an earlier brand. No earlier Richie characters seem to be in it at all.
Basically, director says "I can't sell my hip rich-kid series, so let's make the minimum number of changes necessary to pass it off as an existing property."
I'm not a big fan of the old Richie Rich comics, but it's a waste of the brand to do this.

Which raises what I think is an interesting question: what to make of existing brands which no one has yet been able to re-package for more than a generation or two?

At some point, what are Betty Boop and Casper good for? I collected Richie Rich comics as a young child, and I don't remember there being very much to the brand. Now I remember, there was a cartoon series that they developed off of it in the late 70s/ early 1980s. I think the main main of featured very prominently there. Richie Rich isn't the weakest of brands, but unless some fans remember it with passion, the brand probably never had too much going for it. I don't want to meet the Kwikie Koala or the Snorks again.

Sometimes I come upon a brand and realize that it has not been exploited or successfully translated as far as I'm aware. We are getting down to the bottom of the barrel, after the Peabody and Sherman movie. Felix the Cat? Krazy Kat and Ignatz Mouse? Pogo? Somehow, they always find more barrel at the bottom.

As long as bankers are calling the shots (and that's essentially what's happening in most studios), they'll always side with something that's made a profit in the past, rather than take a risk on original programming.

With notable exceptions, of course.

But it's not always a bad thing. We're getting the English language Real Humans and a Westworld series out of this endless barrel-scraping. And Nolan' Batman trilogy was light years better than everything before in the brand.

It's actually a rather complex world with some strong heroes and villains. I was never a big fan as a kid because I thought Scrooge McDuck did "super-rich adventurer" better by being miserly and swashbuckling–whereas Richie was more vanilla–but that doesn't mean I like the idea of picking up the Richie brand to do it almost in name only.
Richie Rich isn't the weakest of brands, but unless some fans remember it with passion, the brand probably never had too much going for it.
Quite a few do seem to remember it with passion–it's from those fans, in my comic-collecting circle, that I learned about its history. In the 1990s, it was a casualty of its corporate owner, Harvey, whose hotshot new CEO got a license to publish New Kids on the Block comics (!), put out a huge glut of around six a month, then ate his corporate shirt after New Kids mania died. Richie didn't become unpopular, he just vanished when the company was forced to fold.

Now, Krazy Kat and Ignatz Mouse–they're really good. :)

Uh-oh. You asked for it. (They made these from 1916 to the 1960s, so something went right...)
And what shall we name the breakfast cereal?
Breakfast Bricks? Krazy Kat, a professional masochist, likes nothing better than Ignatz bopping him/her on the head with bricks. No kidding.

I'm frightened to look. I know too much about so much of pop culture, fifty years and I've never heard of those cartoons? That's buried deep. Some zombies should remain dead.

I think that various studios are seeing Marvel Studios' success and desperately trying to ape whatever they do in hopes of getting similar success without understanding exactly why Marvel is succeeding. Production stuff aside, Marvel Studios is not ashamed to be making comic book movies and TV shows, with all the goofiness that sometimes goes along with that. While Man of Steel has a color-washed Superman snapping necks (ugh), Marvel comes out with a film featuring a talking raccoon and a walking tree set to a Greatest Hits of the 70s compilation, and THAT was the better received film over the Last Kryptonian.

This Richie Rich project is very much the same thing- someone saw the buzz surrounding Marvel's upcoming Defenders Project on Netflix, and decided to mimic it without really giving a crap.

I agree the series doesn't look very promising, humour-wise, but in this story...
http://www.examiner.com/article/brooke- ... ichie-rich
...the actress talks about Irona dancing in the rain and her system going haywire. Sweet.

Just skimmed through the first season. I can confirm that the series is dreadful, but Wexler is definitely one of the sexiest robots I've seen. The plot of the final episode has her malfunctioning, and Richie sends her off to be repaired. She is unfortunately temporarily replaced by an irritating and very underage girl robot for the duration of the episode. What a waste of that idea.

But otherwise, every episode has her robot nature in focus. Her voice has been edited to sound more robotic and she plays a weird dead pan version of an obviously cold and removed robot. I didn't see that sequence Fection mentioned where she goes haywire in the rain, but I really was jumping around the episodes. If anyone wants to take a closer look, be my guest, but the actors, dialogue, and laugh track are painfully annoying. It's a shame too, because Netflix usually puts out quality content.

Aw, man! I KNEW it was too good to be true. But in any case, if and when I see it, I want to see Wexler's performance, firsthand.

Unfortunately it is a childrens show and they tend to be a little on the ridiculous side...based on my skimming, it was like watching a cheesy Disney channel show.

Oh man. I just skim-watched all 10 current episodes. It's pretty painful. Irona has some of the better lines, but that really isn't saying much. This page:
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt4160920/episodes
...says there's supposed to be 21 episodes, so perhaps there's more on the way. Malfunction-wise, Irona has a brief malfunction around 9 minutes into episode 9 (walking repeatedly into a wall) and, as AmpFetish said, at the start of episode 10 (repeating the same line over and over). But other than that, I can't recommend it for it's creative contribution to television.

Well at least we have more malfunction content to look forward too. The series is definitely worth quite a few screen caps as Wexler is pretty damn sexy. In fact, it's kind of concerning how much they sexualize her considering that it's a show aimed at kids. If you read the reviews on Netflix, all the parents are complaining about how odd it is that the young main character intentionally purchased Irona because of how hot she is.

Anyways, I'm going to make the best of it. But I can tell that this isn't going to be renewed for another season. Netflix don' fucked it up.
