Hey, all!
Basically I'm looking for a way to take audio files (of, say, a woman speaking) and run them through some software to make them sound more artificial or mechanical. I'm a cheapskate, and I'd like it to be free if at all possible. Any suggestions?
I'm a novice when it comes to audio editing software, but I work as a server sysadmin so I'm no slouch in the general field of computing. Don't be afraid to get technical.

PS: I've been working on a short story. I'm the slowest writer in the world, though, so no promises on when it's coming out.

Another option, if you have access, is to run an auto-tune filter over the voice, playing around with the degree to which it will quantize each pitch. That way, you get that 'plateau' effect as the voice changes pitch, without some of the more distracting filters (like chorus / flange) that other techniques use.

Use Melodyne. It's an auto-tuning tool that can quantize notes of vocals. You can set all your vocal syllables to a single note (B flat for example) for a very monotone robot-like sound.
