today we burn tons of excedent food to create prices that stimulate agriculture as a business.
Food shortage is not a real problem, but a power balance one (yet, free food is not a good idea in low education-high poverty environments).
Today we have genetical enhancement to create wonders (even if used terribly wrong today) together with any future tech, any not overpopulated society would easily eat gourmet food each day.
nations are weld together by production, (fear for other organized groups of humans), and governments moved by the power that is granted by possessing a great deal of human resources, all services given to those resources are only meant to make them more productive, if that is lost so are governments and the idea of nation and humans get back to big micro management.
Tradition would be anything from religion to ethics that make's the creation of human resources keep spinning.
we are not the product of love but useful ancestors to some tycoon or expanding nation.
