Almost Human

Post by Spaz » Mon Nov 18, 2013 12:38 am

I decided to start a new thread with information just for Almost Human, now that the series has officially started.

Spoiler Alert applies for those who wish to actually watch the show.

Anyway, there is a fembot in the pilot episode. The scene is of a headless body with a definite bosom. Very brief scene, happens just before a commercial break.

Then, you see the head in an evidence locker near the end of the show.

What's important this headless fembot is wearing casual clothes. There's hope there will be more fembots (not only sexbots). :)

In one of the early scenes of Kennex leaving the unlicensed doctor - you can see 'women' dancing in a window... Looks like there'll be a decent amount of content to come.

Based on the scenes on Fox's website - we should run a drinking game for how many times they say "sexbot" in tonight's episode :-)

Someone beat me to it in starting a thread. I did see the first episode. I might add some more details later on. :)

However I am reminded about another cop drama Mann and Machine (Yes the one I think went ONLY 6 episodes) I do hope that the lead actors for Almost Human do a lot better than what happened to David Andrews and Yancy Butler. (They have disappeared.)

I do like the story set up and I do hope that Dorian's origins get revealed although I hope an appearance of a sister unit in a later episode.

Since I don't know how to make a spoiler space I wish that I can add more. :(

I totally get what you're saying Brytestar and I agree. I just wanted to point out that David Andrews has been pretty steadily employed. http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0028625/

Now we need to find out what happened to Yancy Butler. :) Still I want to add more but I cant find the code for spoiler spaces. I want a world to immerse in. How did the MXs got built? Why did the DRNs not in wide use too 'flawed' as it were. I want a story that would help me paint a picture of that universe.

Looks like you're right. They both have that same bump on the top of their nose.

It's too much to hope that detective Stall turns out to be a bot.

She can take me in for questioning any time :)

Major plot problem: we can grow human skin pretty well now, and without killing anyone.
We don't have to wait 35 years for this episode's plot to be fatally flawed.

Yeah, the cultures we do now are pretty crappy but in three decades that shouldn't be an issue.

Overall the series is a nice buddy-cop drama with decent characterization and good acting, but it's not really good science fiction. The ability to make machines with the level of intelligence shown even by the standard police-droids would change almost every aspect of technological civilization (Industry, war, the labor and stock markets, etc.) but the series, like most television scif, mostly just takes place in 2014 + robots. The EMP thing was kinda lame, too, since EMP (even if you could generate it like they did) is pretty easy to protect against. Most military hardware is EMP protected as a matter of course, for instance. Its effects also aren't dependent on any "frequency" that would differ from one piece of hardware to the next, inside the bounds of reason. A virus or hacking attempt would have been more believable.

Speaking of those androids, I'm not sure why they don't have an up-armored, less friendly-looking (read: sloped armor instead of a face) model for situations where armed opposition is expected. The equivalent of the robot infantrymen I imagine the world's militaries probably employ in that universe.

That said, it's good enough to keep me watching.

Not sure how to interpret this request. Do you mean add spoiler-tags, perhaps?

Also, what Dale Coba and I point out aren't technically "plot holes" at least if I understand the term correctly, they're contradictions between the show and current best scientific knowledge. That doesn't make it a bad show, like I said. I'd argue that actual plot holes, the show contradicting itself, have a much worse impact on watchability.

As seen from a Stepfordian perspective, Albanian mob fembot technology of 2048 is primitive, sadistic and wasteful.

Or contradiction with what's been know about DNA since Watson and Crick and what's been known about computers since Turing and Von Neuman? Oh, and contradictions all logic since Aristotle. It still might somehow be self-consistent somehow, whatever. All I want is good five minute clips - I can't watch the crap that is ordinary cop shows anyway. Oh, I'm complaining but I know that this crap actually isn't worse than the rest of what on TV now. However much I hate most of it, I'm root for it, for those good five minutes.

In the original european version, the female detective turns to be an undercover robot. So there's good chances that Stall is, just look at her bio on the Fox website. She's described as a no-lifer workaholic, and that's a good clue if you ask me. :D

I'm just interested in seeing other types of androids, such as domestic or companion units. Possibly even experimental ones designed to pass as humans in nearly every way.

On another note, I am enjoying the partnership between the two leads.

He's talking about the Swedish series "Akta Manniskor" ("Real Humans"). "Almost Human" is not a remake of that series; however, a British remake of "Real Humans" is planned for SkyTV, or was last I checked.

You know what's odd? "Mann & Machine" was actually less cliched than "Almost Human"! There was less spoon-feeding of the audience, and the characters were more original. For all its ghastly flaws I was ultimately kind of impressed by it, after I finally had the chance to watch it (my thanks to whoever made it available on the FTP).

And I should also say that "Real Humans" was absolutely gripping. "Almost Human"... not so much. I will still watch it though, even if it makes me angrier and angrier. Karl Urban is the only saving grace so far (he's always great).

To see what I think is a far superior rendering of technology, look at the Sci-fi channel's Continuum.
No bots - but I rarely wince in disgust at any cliches or naive uses of technology.

I'm kind of curious what audience this show is aimed at.

Scifi fans will be turned off by the logical problems as has been mentioned earlier in this thread and fans of cop dramas (mostly older folks) I'm guessing won't care for the futuristic elements.

I did enjoy episode 2 however and found it refreshing that the show featured a very attractive African American sexbot in more than a background role.

The show will probably be canceled before Stall is revealed :(
