*facepalm* Dude, you're NOT helping.

So, on another message board I frequent, someone tried to start up a serious discussion about fembots. Of course, he did in what is quite possibly the most misogynistically half-assed fashion I've ever seen.

Where is the Thoreau of technosexuals?!? Where is the erudite scribe who can sum up our ideas in a way that, if not necessarily wins people over to our side, at least gets them to stop thinking of us as weird?

I'm working on something like that as part of my post-script to Virus Alert.

The id animal inside wants to play roles not appropriate in RL - and why not, between consensual adults?

The erudite scribe needs to grasp the cyborg feminism of Donna Harraway, to understand the social/sexual dynamics shaping us in this identity-self-constructing era, to see how the fetish enables liberating play with those ideas.

We make more sense if the author understands the RW social dynamics, which we then invert and negate and turn upside-down.

D'oh! That's right. Here's the relevant part-
Or will it break the power of feminists that have only one real tool for getting male compliance (i.e. "Either you cooperate or you sleep on the couch until the end of the month!")? ... So, this offers men a viable alternative product to a monopoly currently held if you want that product. Does this mean women will have to change to try and hold onto market share?

Also, I think that author referring to women as a "product" pretty much takes any legitimacy out of his arguments.

Yeah, pretty much, though, to be fair, he seems to be likening women as vendors and sex as the product rather than women as products. A semantic distinction, I'll grant you.

Well,

If someone was really ambitious, they'd make a reply to this:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eCUrtFnofQM

I have to say that my impression of current culture is that there has been increases in BOTH crazed, ignorant misogynistic anti-feminists on the right and only-somewhat-less-crazed anti-sex "second-wave" feminists on the left. A friend recently posted article that could be summarized as "sure, all the statistical claims that the Superbowl Sunday involved an spike in wife beating were unsupportable but you're stil a misogynist if you debunk the (unsupportable) claims". There are people on both sides of this "fence" who aren't helping.

I could go on and on but I'll leave it there.

True, but the misogynists seem to be louder and more insufferable, plus they're speaking from the winning position, so it's easy to root against them, as everyone loves the underdog.

Yes, that is pretty much extreme feminism in action, isnt it? Agreed, there is some misogyny in those ads, but seriously, there are some ads that go the other way too. And hey, unless she knows otherwise, those fembots seen arent real, and somehow I suspect the model (others were presumably CGI?) did the ad quite freely, for good money.

Lets face it, adverts are designed to sell, you sell to your core audience.
I'm just a 'girl' who wants to become a fembot whats wrong with that?

Looking at my work shifts for the next couple of weeks, all I could sell is them lol! And I would do that happily, believe me, some crazy hours there! Either that, or I need to be actually turned into a robot so I can cope with them! :rotfl:

Oh, I wish :D

Oh, why did I major in English instead of dual-majoring in robotics and medicine?!? The folly!
