Would the SOPA make the FC disappear? When will the SOPA become real law?

HEY! You leave our politicians alone! They love us and only want to protect us from immorality and free stuff! They don't want us to be corrupted by silly things like open minds and free will. That's why our beloved corporations pay them the big bucks so they won't have to work harder to make a good product. Shame on you!

Internet access is not a human right. It’s not me saying that, either. It’s Vint Cerf, Google’s Internet Evangelist.

ESA May be backing SOPA, but we’re seeing developers themselves such as Curt Schilling’s 38 Studios come out against it. But support for the OPEN Act is growing, as it protects American rights without trying to censor the Internet or impose destructive burdens on Americans online.

Defeat SOPA. Pass OPEN. Everyone wins. Even if the RIAA and MPAA think they’d benefit from government picking winners and losers.

Another Congressman opposes the SOPA.

DEFINITELY good news in my book. All we need now is to convince the rest of them that this thing sucks, and they'll do the right thing and kill that damned bill.

Awesome news, DukeNukem 2417.

After searching, I found this little bit which I also sent to Darrel Issa's twitter.

Here's the link I found:

If that doesn't tell you that Lamar Smith is a hypocrite, I don't know what will.

I sincerely hope these protests continue, and that Lamar Smith's bill not only fails to pass, but gets shredded.

Looks like the DNS-blocking stuff is getting rolled back in at least one version of the bill by Lamar Smith himself. Good news.

It doesn't look like the debate is even close to being over. I say that we in The United States really need to throw these jerks who are sponsoring this out of office. Seriously.

One article i read said that companies were asked to list what sites should be blocked. Monster cable the company that makes cpu, stereo,tv hook ups listed both the Sears and Costco wedsites.WTF. Time Warner music has there own site for the muscian 50 Cents because he is on there label, but listed his personal site has one that should be blocked. Like 50 cent is going to give away all his own music. Some of the sites listed by some of these companies had nothing to do with them. And what beef does Monster have with Sears or Costco.

Just writing to ask: has there been any discussion of contingency plans in the event that SOPA does become law?

Robotman, I know that you're domiciled outside of the United States. Now if you're a U.S. citizen or you frequently travel to the United States then I perfectly understand your reluctance to expose yourself to potential personal liability should SOPA and PIP become law; if you're not exposed in this way, though, I think the possibility of getting sued under these laws is a little like the lawsuits filed in the U.S. under the Helms-Burton Act, which were roundly condemned as violations of international law and not enforced in the rest of the world. The Canadian government even offered assistance to defendants. Still unpleasant, though.

However,in such an eventuality, is there anyone else in this community, a non-U.S. citizen domiciled outside the United States, who would be willing and able to reestablish the websites on a foreign server and take over web hosting/webmaster responsibilities?

Well, that linked story is ridiculous. Britain doesn't know what the hell it's doing. I know for a fact that dual criminality is a minimum prerequisite for extradition from Canada, and I can't imagine why the UK would agree to a regime in which it was not.

But regardless: I would still seek out someone willing to take over as a "Plan B", just so that the websites don't have to be dismantled should the worst come to pass (which, fortunately, it looks like it won't). Ideally someone from a country that doesn't extradite its nationals (which is most countries in Europe).

I just don't want to see FC and other sites die. I don't. Wikipedia survived and said "NO". over 162 million stayed strong... but it isn't over.

I do agree on one thing, nuke the links to sites in China, Ukraine and other lawless countries. It doesn't take much for a person of average intelligence and experience to work out what they really are and put them on a blacklist. It won't stop piracy, but at least it will put a dent in it ...

Using the same methods as Iran and China to crack down on Internet piracy wouldn't actually be such a terrible thing, considering how out of control things have gotten. But I don't see why (beyond enabling government authorities to use those methods) a new law is required. Just use them to enforce existing anti-piracy laws. And criminalizing sites and site hosts for linking to pirate sites is obviously going much, much too far: it's impossible for a major website with thousands of links to properly vet every single one and be sure that no illegal activity is going on at the destination. This is a huge overreach by the entertainment industry, and these bills need to be junked, with new ones written from scratch (and not by industry lobbyists, but, and here's a concept, by actual, competent, elected lawmakers).

As of right now SOPA and PIPA have both been pulled due to the huge groundswell of support against both bills. I'm sure this isn't over but we did good, internet, we did good.

Big thanks to those of you who signed online petitions and supported the myriad different causes that helped get these things killed.

That is what honestly got me frightened about the SOPA/PIPA. I was not really afraid of having any pirating or freeshare sites shut down, but it did really freak me out that the MPA and the RIAA had this much pull. At least with China and Iran, those were actions taken by their respective governments, not private corporate interests. Someone really needs to get a handle on these guys before they really do something damaging.

No one is acting on this. No sites have been taken down due to SOPA or PIPA. BUT Megaupload was taken down due to existing copywrite and anti-piracy laws. It could not have happened if it wasn't for the fact that there were physical servers located in Virginia, USA. Without those, the US government could have done nothing. SOPA would have let them shut down the site even if it didn't have any physical servers in America. Luckily SOPA and PIPA are dead. You will see versions of these rewritten and snuck into other bills... they will not be as extreme, but they will allow some sort of anti-piracy censorship. For now breathe easy, but stay vigilant. It is only a matter of time before these politicians and big companies decide they want to try again.

New media, vs Old media. WHO WILL WIN???

I personally put my money on the side that's about to have the $100 billion dollar IPO. I'm not normally one to quote Hegel or Marx but, when the thesis (new order) and antithesis (old order) collide, historically things never work out in favor of the old guard. Social darwinism at the highest levels of market capitalism, it would be fun to watch if the right to free information wasn't held in the balance.
