Beautiful People

Post by xBOT » Thu Jan 12, 2012 4:59 am

Came across this today, hopefully it'll be good!

Thought-provoking science fiction is in short supply on network TV in the U.S. – so it's a hopeful sign that NBC has ordered a pilot for Beautiful People. In this near-future-set show, human-appearing robots live among us, as the perfect slaves. What could possibly go wrong?

NBC will pick it up.
It'll co-star Carrot Top and Joy Behar.
Charlie Sheen will be the head writer and creative consultant.
The "robots" will actually be human clones with computer chips in their brains {and talk like Jar-Jar Binks}.
William Shatner will sing the theme song.
It'll air at 1am.
Solyndra will be the major sponsor.
Two episodes will air before cancellation.
DreamWorks will make a motion picture "re-imagined" from the series in 5 years' time, starring Owen Wilson and Lindsay Lohan.
SyFy will re-boot it 25 years from now, and it'll run for 22 years, beating out Gunsmoke and Law & Order as longest-running series.............

I'm just worried that with NBC's track record, the show will get cancelled before the first season even ends.

This is interesting. From the i09 article on Äkta Människor (http://io9.com/5875572/this-swedish-rob ... %5Bnsfw%5D):

"It looks kind of similar to the new NBC show Beautiful People"

Typical Americans! You mean the show that is already airing on Swedish television looks like the American "show" that is still just a script for an as-yet unproduced pilot?

More than that, it's obvious that "Real Humans", just from its polished appearance, must have already been well into production (if not wrapped) before the Beautiful People script was even bought by NBC. And that purchase is still not a guarantee that a pilot will actually happen, given the way Hollywood works!

Argh!

Anyway, all that aside, it looks like this is another of those moments where the same idea suddenly finds multiple simultaneous expressions (think Armageddon/Deep Impact, or The Matrix/Dark City/The 13th Floor). Given the still strong likelihood of NBC screwing up Beautiful People, I'm grateful for that. "Real Humans" is the Real Deal. Virtually every TV show in Sweden receives some public money, eliminating the need to always maintain crazy high ratings; and with a British remake in the tube, we'll soon be having double the Euro-fun!

Are we sure that these shows aren't two adaptations of the same story/treatment?

The author of the Millenium (Dragon Tattoo) novels, for instance, intended them to be published in Britain -- and only after the author's death did anyone give serious consideration to publishing them in his home country.

I'm sure there are better examples than that one, but these shows look so similar that I would be surprised if they weren't linked somehow.

My gut feelings are as good as ever - here's a direct quote from the site xbot posted the link to:

" (The high-end "Mechanicals" like Tina and her family have no metal parts – instead, they're more like cyborgs, with some silicon chips and plastic, but also organic parts grown from the DNA of John Does, and possibly federal prisoners as well.) "

Like I said, the "robots" ain't really ROBOTS.

Oh, and the company that makes the "Mechanicals" is named Universal - clever, eh? I didn't think I'd live long enough to see something make The Stepford Wives 2004 look good in comparison, but the good ol' Fun Factory seems set to make the impossible possible with this sorry piece of shit. Long may it STAY in development..............

I read somewhere that "Beautiful People" is a no go.

Likewise. If I'm not mistaken, NBC execs decided against ordering a full series after not being sold on the pilot.

This doesn't surprise me. Every time I heard something about the show, it sounded less appealing.
