People should deprecate the use of primary batteries in their fembot stories because right now multi-fuel hydrocarbon fuel cells are available for purchase.

100% Made In American Adaptive Materials currently offers 50 and 130W continuous fuel call units. They run on any mix of propane and butane with ethanol in the development pipeline. 300g of propane can replace over 4 pounds of batteries. Best of all they can load match to not waste power when your bot is in standby mode.

Good stuff! I'm glad to see technology progressing in this direction.
My only immediate concern is cost-effectiveness. I think the biggest reason batteries remain so popular is because they are relatively easy and cheap to produce vs. charging and loading a fuel cell. Many other next-gen technologies face the cost hurdle over legacy devices, too.
Regardless, fuel cell technology holds a lot of promise, and I hope to see an increase in their prevalence in the coming years.

Well the DoD is going nuts for this as it drastically increases the power an individual soldier can carry and propane can be found all over the world for a quick top off. RV and boat users are also buying them for APUs as they are quieter and because they usually only need a few watts for electronic gear the load matching is makes fuel cells much more efficient than internal combustion.Regardless, fuel cell technology holds a lot of promise, and I hope to see an increase in their prevalence in the coming years.

a company named Bloom just had a public meeting about their new multi-fuel fuel cells. apparently they figured out how to get quite a bit of of electrochemical power out of economic materials.
the key here is their materials are derived from less expensive compounds like sand based ceramics AND don't need to run on hydrogen gas. instead they can run on liquid fuels or gas (alcohols, methane, propane, possibly gasoline even tho it's dirtier, etc).
according to cbs 60 min article, a stack of these cells about the size of a bread loaf can power a U.S. home ..
this means an independent portable power source that can fit into a human frame and continue to provide power (per weight and size) for much longer than standard lithium batteries.
I like the idea that all a companion needs to keep going is an occasional swig of vodka or ever-clear. looks like Goening was onto something with Bender being an alcoholic by design
This power source is on the horizon, micro linear motors are in production, and fast portable cpu's and light weight high strength carbon fibers are already here. The only major hurdles left in my mind are realism. True to life skin, eyes (well more specifically, eyelids that are finely seated on the eyes, and snappier eye movements), and dynamic muscle tone and density (firmness and volume under the skin when flexed, softness when relaxed)

The muscle problem is essentially solved: Artificial MuscleThe only major hurdles left in my mind are realism. I think vision is a tougher nut to crack, although it's coming along.
