Two issues raised by frozen-moments.org

Post by Karel » Wed Jun 14, 2006 7:22 pm

Since its destruction by hackers in January, the new, resurrected Freezemodeling.com (the LMC's bbs) has been a shadow of its former self, a haven for lurkers, spammers, creeps, and the dregs of the internet. There are just as many posts as before, if not more, but most are just dozens of naked links to any YouTube or MySpace site with vaguely suggestive photos or video of people doing 'the robot.' It's comprehensive, but its mostly a waste of time. Occasionally, though, there's a real gem, like this puppetmaster find of Vitrine Viva performing on Brazilian TV.

(I still don't understand the wisdom behind removing the 'h,' but I've done it anyway).

And on a related topic, what kind of defences do we have here against hackers? Because I'd hate to see Fembot Central get trashed. Freezemodeling.com got taken down in a coordinated assault by professional internet criminals with nothing better to do, and though I don't consider myself an unreasonably paranoid fellow, I can't shake the horrible feeling that the kind of people who would use their considerable skills to destroy a free special-interest bbs (as opposed to, say, a political blog or Amazon.com) are at least partly motivated by misguided moralism, and may be staking us out even as I write this.

Karel,

Online vandals are called defacers. Sometimes they are really crackers, but most times they are just skript-kiddies who like to play with things they just don't understand.

HACKERS in contrary are the people who build odd stuff like special-interest-software and weird hardware (e.g. fembots and such) and like to discuss about such topics.

To protect fembot central against vandals, I think a backup is the best strategy. But I'm sure the staff here already implemented such a thing (as they seem to be hackers, too).

By the way: The idea behind leaving out the "h" is to force readers to copy-paste the link into the browser's location bar. The background here is that many sites disallow direct linking to non-html content from outside to avoid other sites make money with their stuff.
