Remake of Casino Royale in the works

Post by fection » Fri Oct 14, 2005 5:24 am

Just in case you ain't heard, they're re-making Casino Royale, though you've got to wonder if the ASFR aspects will survive a re-write.

I thinking it wont if they fallow the book which was a regular bond adventure. but if they fallow the old movie and make spoof bond movie it might.

I wasn't aware the 1967 film had ASFR aspects to it at all ... can you elaborate?

I seem vaguely to remember some 'controlled females' in the film, but it was many years ago and I couldnt tell you if they were robots or brainwashed girls now.
Had a look on IMDB and no direct mention of androids/robots or anything similar.
Hilarious, but crazy unlike most Bond Films, this was done as a spoof and it showed! Apparantly reading the quotes at IMDB suggested it wasnt a fun film for the makers though!
I'm just a 'girl' who wants to become a fembot whats wrong with that?

I had the same thought, I've come to the decision that they arnt going to have the bots in it. Afterall what self respecting bond film has woody allen and the late great peter sellars in.....No from our point of view not the best remake.

Thanks ... this reminds me, though they are not robots, the mind-controlled girls in "On Her Majesty's Secret Service" were quite memorable. :)

Being a Bond fan, I've been following stories related to the next film rather closely for the past few months (especially the rampant speculation about who would replace Pierce Brosnan, which finally ended today with the Announcement of Daniel Craig as the new 007), and I am 99.99 percent sure it's going to be a straight Bond flick, without any ASFR content whatsoever, loosely based on the first novel "Casino Royale".

For those who don't know, Casino Royale was the first of Ian Flemming's James Bond books ever published, and oddly enough, it was the only book which never got properly adapted to the screen.

The Casino Royale film we all know was not an adaptation of the first Bond novel, but a spoof (pretty darn obvious if you've seen the thing, badly edited too) of the whole Bond mythos, which only used the name and a few elements from the first book.

I've been trying to buy a hardcover copy of the novel, but haven't found one because it hasn't been widely available for a couple of years now because it's been out of print for a while (with the movie, that's gonna change, obviously).

Supposedly,it's more of a character driven thriller, it's plot set almost entirely during one night in Monaco's Casino Royale, without the whiz-bang we are all used to seeing in a Bond story, and featuring a more ruthless,cold-calculating Bond. Taking that into account, the production company will likely do away with most of those aspects, add some whiz-bang, some one-liners and more cleavage (which as a film-buff, I'm ashamed to admit I wouldn't mind seeing in any Bond flick). Sadly, no robots will likely be added, unless the director wants to be a wise ass and make fun of the Woody Allen flick by featuring some scene set up for comic relief, likely featuring some gadgets and John Cleese as "Q".

Casino Royale was adapted to the small screen way back when. I have on video an American tv production starring Barry Nelson.

I stand corrected, but...

Wasn't that the black and white version which had an americanized "Jimmy Bond"?

Yep, that's the one. But still, it might give an idea of what a "serious" version of Casino Royale would look like.

Here is some more info on the TV production of Casino Royale from a book called The James Bond Films : A Behind the Scenes History by Steven Jay Rubin.

It was in Casino Royale, not Dr. No, that James Bond made his first screen appearance. The first Bond film was transmitted on American live television on October 21st 1954. Casino Royale was the third episode in CBS's Climax Mystery Theatre, an anthology of suspense stories presented by actor William Lundigan. Veteran Broadway producer and film director Bretaigne Windust decided to give the drama an American perspective and cast Yankee, Barry Nelson to portray the British agent. Peter Lorre played the evil Le Chiffre, a Russian agent who controls the resources of the world's largest and most famous casino, whilst Linda Christian became the first Bond girl.

Filmed mainly on a casino set built at Television City in Hollywood, Casino Royale lacked all the adventure and dazzling locations associated with 007. It was, essentially, a simple duel between Le Chiffre and Bond, with a baccarat table between them. Not surprisingly, Bond's first screen appearance passed almost unnoticed by the critics.

The one aspect of ASFR that is unquestionable in this mess of a movie is the duplicate of Daliah Lavi's character: The Detainer. She was created by Jimmy Bond/Doctor Noah (Woody Allen) to look like the sexy agent.

The double meets the original on a tour of Dr. Noah's aircraft.

She is quite impressive and monotone, but unfortunately gets very little screen time.
