The first one seems kind of creepy to me. Maybe because the face looks kind of puffy.
Second one looks really good, though.

Yeah, I agree, the first one is very creepy. Looks like a child, or perhaps a stunted adult. The body proportions are all wrong. I was going to say something but then I thought somebody would start getting on my case for being critical ...

well, despite all that I think its a good start. After all, once the mechanics of something is figured out, its fairly easy for creative artists and the such to come up with a more "attractive" exterior. So, I've faith things will progress well =)
