BSG Under The Radar

Post by kb7rky » Sun Jan 09, 2005 4:07 pm

Hey, did anyone manage to catch Battlestar Galactica last night? It ran in place of Andromeda at or around 8:00 last night (Saturday evening)...but, get this...it wasn't on Sci-Fi! It was on 'regular' TV channels (in my area, that would be the local NBC affiliate out of Spokane, Washington).

I never knew about it, until I was channel-surfing and happened to stumble across it around 8:30 - 9:00. Don't know for sure how long it was on before that, though.

I'm surprised nobody knew about this beforehand, so we could have set the VCRs.

Oh, yeah, better mention, too, that they hacked the guts out of it...there were a lot of scenes deleted in what I did manage to see of it.

I wonder if they'll run the mini-series on Sci-Fi as the first episodes before launching the series itself, which, BTW, is this coming Friday (Jan. 14)

NBC and Sci-Fi

Post by Doctor Robo » Mon Jan 10, 2005 4:33 pm

NBC and The Sci-Fi Channel are owned by the same company. This came to be last May when General Electric (NBC's owner) bought Universal Studios from Vivendi and merged it with its own media businesses, creating "NBC Universal". GE now owns 80% of the new company and Vivendi owns 20%.

My point is that since Sci-Fi Channel and NBC are now 'sister' networks don't be surprised to see more synergistic cross-programming like that in the future.

If BSG does well on Sci-Fi, looks for summer runs on NBC. They have a LOT of shows tanking this year.

It's apparently going to be on Friday nights. Sorta the kiss of death. Nothing aired on Friday nights does well.

I also noticed BSG on the Spokane NBC affiliate, after having seen the unedited version a week before on SPACE. It'd be great if NBC's lackluster schedule resulted in its getting picked up by a major network, because I really, really like what they've done with it (i.e., made it completely unlike the original series). And Six is HOT.

Not necessarily...look how well Andromeda and Stargate SG-1 are doing on Sci-Fi...and they're on Friday nights

I would think it's all in the marketing area, but, judging from the BSG mini-series, it should do pretty well.

Wasn't the BSG mini-series supposed to be just that? As I recall, there weren't any plans to make a series...

Ah, so you're in my neighborhood...so to speak ;)

I was just surprised to see it on KHQ last Saturday...took me completely by surprise. I finally ended up recording the last hour or so.

Nah, Six isn't hot...she's ohmygawd HOT! But, don't forget about Boomer...though here's a thought:

What if she (Boomer) isn't a Cylon replicant? Suppose the Cylons captured her and just made copies of her, then brainwashed her to forget about the capture?

Just something to think about:

True about SG-1. And Andromeda too, though I hope BSG can be better than Andromeda.

The miniseries was a pilot for the series, I believe - a trial run to see if folks would watch. Apparently they did, so the series was given a green light. If they didn't, it wouldn't have.

I'm hoping this will be such a success that Ronald D Moore (the man writing and producing for the most part) will ba able to bank his BSG clout and finally do the series for The Dragonriders of Pern, that WB yanked the plug on days before he was ready to shoot. I'm still pissed about that one. He was going to do it up as a faithful version too. He refused to 'buffy' it up for the younger WB demographic, so they axed it before shooting. Bastards...

Well, of course they did...they were too concerned with ratings and keeping their bank accounts full.

Too bad everything boils down to money...

Oh, that's right...they just don't care, do they?

And then, our society has the gall to gripe about 'violence on TV..."

I'm refreshing the thread again with another BSG Under The Radar observation:

Sci Fi did run the miniseries again earlier this week...and I just missed recording it.

Oh, well, at least we have the series mere hours away (within the next 24 hours before the premiere.

Can't wait to see what other Cylon duplicate they try to sneak in on us (besides Boomer)...that'll be interesting.

I know the recent poll says people like their robots "realistic" but I'm sorry, there isn't anything interesting about a TV character who acts perfectly human and happens to be a robot underneath. There has to be *something* in her appearance, speech, or behavior that gives it away, or what's the point?

That's why the Cylon character(s) in the pilot did nothing for me, even though I liked the show overall. Let's face it, if I recall correctly, Boomer presumably doesn't even know she's a robot, and you know they're going to wait a good long time before changing that fact because they know they can't go back once they do that ... so again, why would we expect anything interesting from an ASFR angle from this show any time soon?

But again, I like the show despite all that.

Hey, maybe the Cylon Boomer is the real deal (like Baltar was in the original series)...a human with a vendetta against humanity.

I'm sure you're right about the series producers not wanting to tip their hand so soon, but the anticipation is there.

Wonder if they'll tease us every so often...you think Boomer's about to reveal her true nature, or it's about to be revealed, but something happens...

Speculation will run rampant, of course...here and other forums.

The second hour tonight is supposed to focus on Boomer, I've read. I don't know if that means she's just a main player in that hour's story or if we find out about the Cylon stuff.
