As for me, I think it all started when I saw a videoclip for Bjork - All Is Full of Love. I can't remember the exact date, but I think it was either in the end of May 2002, or in the beginning of June 2002. So, I saw robots in this videoclip...and something "clicked" inside of me.

A few days later, I saw another interesting music video about androids (two manbots): Alpinestars & Brian Molko - Carbon Kid. After watching these videos I decided to add some android characters (both fembots and manbots) to my sci-fi stories. These stories were naive and silly, of course, but it was a good practice for my writing skills.

In September 2006 I saw one particular scene from Quake 4 - yes, I'm talking about stroggification scene (the protagonist is being transformed into a cyborg). This scene is VERY brutal, bloody and extreme. But I became interested in transformations (cyborgization and robotization) because of this scene.

In the middle of April 2007 one of my friends (she liked Quake 2 and Quake 4 too) wrote a small fanfic for me - a fanfic about one of my female OCs being stroggified. It's very difficult to describe my feelings and thoughts about this fanfiction... Well, I liked it A LOT. So I think this little gift from my friend "cemented" my interest in transformations. 1,5 years later I wrote a Quake 4 fanfiction inspired by aforementioned fanfic (and readers liked it). And some years later I decided to write a "proper" story about transformation (maybe I'll post it here).

Looking at some of the responses, I guess I might have misunderstood the point of the topic when I first saw it. My answer which aligns with the preceding ones (short version) is a mix between the liner note images in the Smash Mouth "Astro Lounge" album, various robot girls and women on TV, and my own personal mental explorations. The long version I posted in another topic.

The word "origins" however inspired a more... "historical" concept, I think. Like, the Fembot kink through history. Where did it come from? When and how did it start? Did they have this kink as long as they had other kinks? If not, when and more importantly, why did it start? If so, what did they use for fembots? Fembots made from rocks or clay? Maidens clad in chain-armor? How did attitudes toward it change over time?

My postulation got a little absurd at the end there, but the main idea, though. We all have our own individual stories of how we arrived at a common destination, but how did we all survive before the coming of Futura-Maria in "Metropolis" (1927)? What part of our brain chemistry let us look at this idea then smile, shrug our shoulders, and think "Yeah, okay"? I, personally, don't know.

I didn't get picked in school because I was all but invisible, not because I couldn't play whatever game sides were chosen for. I was on the outside of everything looking in without belonging to anything.

Worse, I have no compassion or feelings against using such force. The only restraint is cold logic and rational thought. It's not that I'd choose to do it, but rather I'd be forced into it by someone. I've been confronted with such situations before. I was never scared, never felt fear. Even when in the Middle East in "combat" situations I didn't feel that way. Major fires on ships I was on, got the same reaction. It was always a measured, thought out, response.
The one thing I do feel is alone most of the time. That bothers me. Having a friend I absolutely know would be there, that was designed for me as a companion intrigues me. That is, someone I know will be there for me the way I've been all-too-many times for others who seemed never to appreciate that.

Yeah, 8 years later... but, duuuude. Fires on ships? Combat in the middle east? I'd LOVE to see THAT DD214...

seemingly there is a short developing stage where children's brain process what is to associate with hotness by some short of imprinting, that's why most common fetishes are 'bout underwear, feet, daddy big protective arms and beard, etc.
But not us my friend
we are about machines that later on we associated with other needs such as dominance, permanent love, fake love, clean tasty fluids or turn a woman into pieces with no consequences.

It started pretty early on me for me, too. The first one I can really remember is when I much younger, I believe there was an episode of The Amanda Show where they had a robotic doppelgänger in the cold open. Then of course there was the ever-lovely T-X from Terminator 3 and the mom-bot from Jimmy Neutron. I wasn't quite sure exactly why this sort of thing resonated with me; but rest assured it did. However, I think what really crystalized it for me was teenage me seeing Ghost in the Shell; specifically that one robot maid from Stand Alone Complex, I think it was the episode "¥€$". The way that concealed gun popped out of her arm, and the way her face opened up to reveal some kind of targeting system.....from that day onward, I just knew.

I don't know how it emerged, all I know is I watched the Not Quite Human films on Disney channel when I was a kid and it just happened...

I was obsessed with this film as a kid. After watching it I would spend hours drawing in an art book figuring out how a robot should be made to appear the most human. I distinctly remember the genius idea of putting a tiny trash compactor in their stomach that presses it into a "tube shape" and then expeling it so they're able to simulate eating.
I wanted a robot friend so badly.
