I used to record radio and TV programs to hifi VHS tapes then transfer them to cassette to play at work on my walkman.
Then came minidiscs, primitive mp3 players and finally iTunes and smartphones.
You really had to want it back in the day

I built a few antennas back in the day. A long wires for shortwave, roof antennas for AM, FM, and my little Ham radio setup.
Never had much money as a kid so things were scrounged from dumpsters and maybe stolen sometimes
HiFi VHS was a pretty cool and underrated format. You could get 6 hours of CD quality audio along with video on a single tape.
Man, I feel old.

i tried a coat hanger for antenna as well, but only for short wave and with limited improvements
my local fm radio signals are good, no need to use any external antennas

I still remember my prized possession - a super-duper high-tech Sony Walkman I got in Japan that had a built-in EQ control and two settings of Dolby noise reduction. It also had settings for playing type I, II, and Chrome cassettes. My tapes never sounded better. I still have it. I remember being amazed at how tiny it was, and that it only ran on 1 AA battery.

Now that I think more about it, it was a Panasonic portable cassette player that I bought in Japan. It was sweet. And it reminds me of this story, which I've told to Kishin before:

When I was in Japan in 1990, I got off the train in Akihabara. In many of the tourist-heavy parts of Tokyo, there were usually young ladies handing out complimentary packets of tissues so you could wipe the sweat from your brow. These tissues were a form of advertising as they had the logo of whatever sponsor had payed for them all over the packaging.

Anyway, in Akihabara, right outside the train station, there were some very attractive girls dressed in spandex handing these out. Each girl had the logos of a different electronics company emblazoned on her spandex shorts and top. There was a Sony girl, an NEC girl, and of course, the Panasonic Girl.

She was right in front of me, and she was beautiful. And you know what was going through my head. I was imagining that she had been manufactured by Panasonic, and her outfit and her practiced and almost choreographed movements were fuel for my fire.

I'm sure my mouth hung open at her beauty and at the intricacies of my fantasy as I approached, took a packet of tissues from her, and mumbled "domo arigato". She smiled, said nothing, and rotely turned her attention to the next person in line.

I thought about her for weeks after that, and still remember her as "The Panasonic Girl".
