CJ7?

Post by Keizo » Mon Apr 07, 2008 7:40 pm

This is a movie by Stephen Chow of Kung Fu Hustle and Shaolin Soccer fame. I understand that this isn't funny like his other movies and that he doesn't even play the main character. It's actually more of a family film. I'm curious if anyone has seen it because of this in the synopsis:

"Chow plays an astronaut who crashes his spacecraft on another planet. He befriends an android translator (played by Kitty Zhang) who can communicate with aliens.

Scenes include Chow's character being taken to hospital after seemingly plunging to his death; the adopted child crying, whilst Kitty Zhang's android character plays teacher; a birthday party for the child."

From what I saw of the trailer, Chow is NOT an astronaut nor are they on another planet, but from what I've read of other synopsis they confirm that Kitty Zhang's character is an android, and she's not bad looking either! :D

You can see her dressed in white at the beginning of this trailer:

Any info would be appreciated. Thanks.

I think that BD is right on this one. You can probably get all of this by watching the trailer in Keizo's link but here's a quick summary.

Chow plays a down-on-his-luck construction worker. He arrogantly drives away his girlfriend (the girl in white) and is a lousy father even though his paycheck goes to put his son in a rich-kids school. He can't afford the CJ-1 toy (little battery-powered robot-dogs) that his son wants for his birthday. That night, he sees something hit the ground while digging through a garbage dump. He brings a small jelly-alien-thing home and offers it to his son, saying "It's better than CJ-1". Presumably 6 levels better because they name it CJ-7. The alien has advanced powers and technology but never speaks, and helps the kid to deal with bullies and the father to turn his life around.

Hilarity genuinely ensues (this is Stephen Chow after all) but the closest thing to robotic would be the CJ-1 which looks like a wireframe aibo. I'd recommend this movie for the comedy but it looks like Kitty Zhang's character is just a human.

Thank you both for the information. Nothing I could find online could give me anything better and I could not find any more information about Kitty Zhang's character other than she was an android teacher/translator. I wonder why it says that in almost all the reviews, but it didn't look like she was anyway. Thanks again :D

I've checked a few reviews linked to from it's metacritic.com page and none of them mentioned her being a robot. You only see her for a couple of shots in the trailer but it seems like a pretty major part of her character for the critics to leave out.

They mentioned Chow's character as being clumsy around her rather than arrogant so I probably misinterpreted the subtitle in the trailer. I'd still wanna see this movie if it ever shows in my area but sorry, looks like no robots.
