I know what you mean. A downloader I'd been using recently vaporized too. I've just started using savetube. It's pretty straightforward to use. Put in the URL of the video along with your email and choice of several format conversions, and in about 5 minutes they'll send you a link to download the file. No signup or membership, just an email address.

If you're using firefox, then I recommend you to download this extension:

If you're not using firefox, then I recommend you to use it!

Not happy talkin' to certain individuals here at the moment but I'll offer a
suggestion. Haven't any here heard of a little program called ORBIT DOWNLOADER?

My method is a firefox addon called Fast Video Download. It's worked quite reliably for a long time. Even when youtube did something about it, they had an update within several days. Also, it grabs the title as the file, which is nice. The only bug I've found is that once in a while it thinks it can't find the data, but when I click it again, it finds it.

I use another go-around, I just view Youtube in the Opera browser, then go to the Opera cache (somewhere buried in your Applications folder) and copy the most recent flash video file out.

I haven't (and won't) upgrade Opera past version 9, I have no idea if the lawyers are gonna tell Opera to disable this in future versions.

It's pretty damn silly that the lawyers are fighting this, logically, the only way to make videos unviewable later would be to make them unviewable at all (like the copy protected music CDs that wouldn't even play in some CD players)

It's all another reason to support browser diversity, not just Firefox, but another one or two like Opera to keep your options open, and the internet free.

Anybody know a good, reliable way to get vids from YouTube that doesn't involve signing up for any services, etc?
Try this page:

http://keepvid.com/

It saves FLV files to your system by plugging in the URL of the page in
question...Of course, then you need to go back to the directory in question
on your HD and rename the file so you can play it in an FLV compatible
viewer. It's a touch cumbersome but it's worked okay for me (mostly).
And it's free (at least as of now)..... :)

Or you can freakin' download Orbit Downloader and create a folder just for
Orbit downloads.

I've used the vdownloader 0.61 program. It has a search browser and looks at more than just youtube sites for videos. Plus you can choose the file format that you want to download the video as.

www.vsdownloader.es

It is freeware.

Realplayer just puts a floating option over any video played in a browser asking you if you want to download it. It only downloads in the .flv format, which (as far as I know) only plays in Realplayer. It's really easy to use, it's free, and its been working for me for nearly a year without any problems.

Riva flv player is a nice, free, small standalone flv player - one of the higher-rated ones on CNet:
