Wow,

Certainly provokes multiple reactions...

1) Japan is WAY ahead of the rest of the world in this. If this is the new technological revolution, they could wind-up ahead of the rest of the world in EVERYTHING.

2) As real, working robots appear, the process of integrating them into society, producing software for them and getting people accustomed to them with extraordinarily complex.

3) It's interesting that the average person would like a humanoid robot not for sex but to simply boss around.

Interesting...

Actually our (ie the Western world) relationship with robots is quite different from the Japanese.

1) They do not suffer from robot prejudice as we do. Western culture is dominated by the "Frankenstein Syndrome" where any artificial creature is regarded with deep suspicion. Asimov's Jewish background did not have this prejudice and his stories were among the very first to portray artificial creatures in a more positive light. Of course his stories were "betterified" in tune with prevailing dogma in the movie adaptation of "I, Robot"

2) A few years ago a popular science magazine ran a design a robot/cyborg competition. The overwhelming majority of designs was a killer robot of some kind or looked very sinister or had a violent/scary backstory.

I think it will be interesting to see how our Western views clash with reality once robots are a reality.
