Pairing pictures with GIF animation

Post by dale coba » Tue Jun 04, 2013 11:47 am

Watching Robotman's recent work with the animated GIF, I was reminded of something... something that I had a devil of a time figuring out what the heck it was called.

Lenticular printing gives you two pictures on the same surface - just tilt a few degrees.

The format guarantees the two pictures will remain together, and is suited to paired pictures which need to be kept together because they were conceived as a pair, to tell a story (however vague). The animated GIF can also be used to present that experience.

An animated GIF pairing of manips, of the kind mastered by BA, Korby, or Froggy99, would extend the storytelling potential - if the Artist can learn the animated GIF process, or gains a tech-savvy collaborator.

Tangentially related (and because I am a bit of an art and design nerd):

While the name of the artist(s) in question escapes me, this technique has also been used by 'legitimate artists' in some gallery shows...

In addition there is also a technique where you create a surface of long, prism shaped forms placed adjacent to each other. Then two images are sliced and placed in an alternating pattern (eg: A/B/A/B/A/B.....etc) so that, as the viewer approaches from one side angle they see one image and as they move around the piece they encounter the other image....No lens involved. Just the positioning of the gallery patron.
Obediantly,
sara

Interesting idea, Dale (and thank you, incidentally, for ranking my 'mastery' with luminaries like BA and Froggy--high praise).

Now that you mention it, I believe I may have the tools at my disposal to attempt such a feat. I think I made a couple of crude animated GIFs (non-fembot related) ages ago. It honestly never occurred to me to try it with a manip. Clearly I should look into this...

A Kickstarter campaign has raised 200% over their goal, for an enterprise to make custom lenticular prints based on animated gifs.
