If I was writing this two months ago, this data log would probably start with “If I ever let myself get talked into something like this again…”

Fortunately for me, this isn’t two months ago.

Right now, I’m as far outside of my comfort zone as physically possible---standing on top of a dam, about to pull a triple-gainer and get to the lowest entry point possible without hitting the water, smashing into the wall or bricking myself in any of a dozen or so ways. The ALPA wants me to, ahem, “enter with the utmost discretion”, search the server farm inside and retrive a few gigs worth of data.

Sounds easy, doesn’t it?

Well, that’s the thing---on paper, it sounds like a walk in the park. In the waking world, however…

…it’s a walk on an iceberg. One rigged with landmines, pressure sensors…never mind.

Long story short, I basically have one way to do this and come out clean, and ninety-nine ways to die trying. If I get caught, the ALPA isn’t sending anyone in to bail me out; if I get damaged, I have 48 hours to make it to a safehouse about 100 miles away from here, and on the off chance that someone manages to get the jump on me and put a few dozen rounds through the back of my skull…well, I’m just hoping it doesn’t come to that. It’s not that I’m scared, or anything…it’s just that right now, any mistakes or miscalculations on my part mean that the ALPA loses a valuable Field Agent (and no, that’s not just shameless self-promotion)…and their case against Matthew Hannsen, aka the Maestro, goes down the tubes with me….

…and I won’t let that happen.

If anyone receives this transmission before I report to the safehouse---or if I don’t reach the safehouse at all---I just want to say one more thing: I didn’t take this mission to see the sights, or to be “Secret Agent Vicki” or anything like that…I accepted this job because of what Matthew Hannsen did back in the early 1990s.

I could go into more detail, but the wind’s about to shift---and I need to make this jump ASAP.

Depending on what happens in a few minutes, this will either be the last internal datalog I ever record…or one that I can look back on and laugh about for being so nervous. Right now, I’m really hoping it’s the latter. In any case…there’ll be enough time for introspection and all that other good stuff when this is over with. I can’t keep stalling forever…

Of course, if I could, I wouldn’t exactly mind…but again, that’s beside the point.

Getting up here wasn’t easy, and I have a feeling that getting down won’t be as much of a cakewalk as I hoped it would be when I showed up…but then again, I don’t do this because it’s easy. I do this because it’s my job, and because it’s what needs to be done.

…and, partially, because it’s kind of cool.

Anyway, back on topic: My internal barometer is detecting a change in the winds…meaning---in the words of one of Dad’s favorite songs---I do believe it’s time for me to fly.
