Re: CASE Act - The future of FembotWiki and Fembot Central
I not so long ago i saw comment after comment online that a thing like article 13 couldn't happen in the US.........
...............Well, now we're all fucked.
And ofcource it's gonna pass because the US goverment is filled with
1) Old people
2) Old people who don't understand the ramifications of fucking with tech laws without consulting ,i don't know, people who know a thing about this that isn't in the pocket of some corporation.
3) Old people who don't understand the ramifications of fucking with tech laws that are corrupt as fuck.
Time to get some VPN's...........so long as they stay legal ofcource..........which won't be long i'm afraid...........

No offense to you Duke, but approximately 157 impossible things have happened since 2017.

...You should probably add a notification on FembotWiki telling people visiting the site that it's shutting down.

Re: CASE Act - The future of FembotWiki and Fembot Central
This seems a bit premature. As far as I was aware, the bill has stalled out this time just as it has the last several times it was introduced. Neither house of Congress has even voted on it, much less passed it. The latter would probably be the opportune time to shut down the Wiki, assuming the bill seemed unlikely to be vetoed.
Countless terrible bills are introduced each year into the US federal legislature, and as with the CASE Act, many have been proposed multiple times before. While it's important to remain vigilant and involved, it is also important not to panic or act precipitately in response to what is still only a latent threat.
If we retreat from the exercise of our liberties the moment they are threatened, then they might as well not exist.

Would you be willing to transfer ownership of the sites to one of us?

So what would it take for me to host my own copy of FembotWiki? I'm 100% willing to do it if someone can help me learn how

Re: CASE Act - The future of FembotWiki and Fembot Central
At a minimum: A stable server (perhaps a VPS such as ones at NQHost) that is capable of running MediaWiki, with enough storage space for it all. If you want the forums, you'll also want to review phpBB's requirements. You can use WikiTools to download the current version of FembotWiki, or Robotman could transfer everything over. Ideally, he transfers ownership of the account(s) that run the forum and wiki, as well as the server, to someone so there is minimal disruption - obviously we'd have to absorb the costs as well.Rexxy wrote:So what would it take for me to host my own copy of FembotWiki? Re: CASE Act - The future of FembotWiki and Fembot Central
I run the FTP server on a dedicated line and server, but opening up the FTP server to web traffic as well would impact the throughput of the server for the FTP...
I suppose that with the Wiki its really only image files being transferred over port 80, but I would need to install all the web plugins for freenas and set up php on it as well. I suppose as an absolute last resort the wiki could be transferred over to the FTP server, its an 8core, 16gb ddr 4 base server with 30TB of space and enough expansion mounts on the case for a further 7 drives.

So I assume with all the stuff on it we'll need the 150G one, right? https://i.imgur.com/Jg5hjFI.png
I think I can swing that. I'm just trying to construct a step-by-step of how to do this.
@Barbarella if you need any help incurring monthly hosting costs or any other kind of upgrades to make the Wiki hostable on your server, let me know, I'd be happy to do it

Re: CASE Act - The future of FembotWiki and Fembot Central
This is a huge overreaction. I have heard internet freedom folks cry that the sky is falling even after actual legislation was passed and the truth is that nothing changes. Copyright Trolls already have plenty of tools to make their threats even if the law is on your side. If anything all sorts of recent court cases have made the legal environment much much better.
Listen, you do whatever you need to, but don't just let them win by destroying an art archive that has been around for well over a decade. At least transfer a backup to someone who is willing to take on the burden. I'm sure there are scores of artists who have moved on or passed on. Don't destroy their legacy.

I respect that media wiki might not be the best option if someone were open to consider it, but are you sure you won’t allow a content transfer R-man?
I can’t blame you for not wanting to continue to host the site. I can only thank you for doing it so long. But I can’t think of any case where someone traced a liability chain back to someone who voluntarily stopped at some point in the past. Will you not reconsider?

Unfortunate. Thanks for giving us a heads-up to run a wiki scraper on it.Robotman wrote:I'm sorry, but the content or ownership of the wiki won't be transferred in any way. I do not want a direct connection from my past hosting/uploading involvement to be around for any new site in the event that this kind of activity is made unlawful.

Shame you're letting the fear of a long shot what-if worst case scenario spook you into shutting the only site of it's kind down like that. Your server space your rules. Can't say I have much respect for you after that, but I've said I'll I'm gonna about the matter.

Tangential question...will THIS site continue to exist, at least for the foreseeable future?

This seems to be way too quick and knee-jerk of a reaction. We are a very small community in the grand scheme of things and I doubt we will be targeted by the government if this law comes into play. If possible PLEASE reconsider shutting down the site or at least transferring ownership. This place is too good to be let go so suddenly

Re: CASE Act - The future of FembotWiki and Fembot Central
Bummer
Firstly - thanks to Robotman for the Wiki, its been great and I will miss it! I don't follow US politics closely, nor copyright or tech law so I can't comment on the severity of the threat posed; if Robotman feels the need to pull out for this or any reason then I for one repect that and am grateful for the contribution he's made over the years. Thank you.
Second - the technical debate above about how to pass the baton is well beyond my understanding but I'm heartened to see responses seeking a way to preserve and build on what our communty has created. I have no nerd-value to contribute but would be prepared to contribute financially if that is needed...
Third - I will continue to write and manip (at my customary sporadic production rate). I do that for my own satisfaction but sharing here and on the Wiki is hugely rewarding as is digesting all the new material produced by others. I'm sure there are enough of us who feel broadly the same way to ensure that there is a future in some form or another...

Re: CASE Act - The future of FembotWiki and Fembot Central
...if the wiki is closing because of CASE...then technically the entire image section of this forum would need to close as well, to a point where no manips at all could be posted on the forum...otherwise closing the wiki would be pointless.
