Would iPhone 6S refuse 9V or 12V input and stays safe?

Post by liliwinnt6 » Mon Mar 20, 2017 11:27 am

Recently I wanted to buy a car charger for recharging my iPhone 6S, but what I found thatmost of the chargers that supports QC 2.0 (or even 3.0) protocol that could charge your device with voltage of 9 volts and 12 volts.
If there's a failure of the charger, it would do 9 volts output to my iPhone, I'm really afraid that iPhone could get killed. So, if you input 9 or 12 volts into the iPhone, would it refuse to recharge or simply got killed?
BTW, long time ago I saw iPod could accept 5-30 volts of input charge (with both USB and IEEE1394 interface), I wonder if the very recent iPhone could be like that or not.
Thank you.

Boris,

So Quickcharge 2.0/3.0 is different than what the iphone uses for rapid charging. Your best bet would be to buy a 2.1Amp car adapter, and get a good, low resistance cable. A low resistance cable would be one that's got thicker wires (which are a lower gauge/AWG). If I remember correctly, the iPhones use 2 pairs of resistors on the D+/D- lines in the charger to indicate the charge rate available, and many people online have reverse engineered the info needed to get high current charging from 3rd party chargers.

If you want to double check, they also sell USB current meters (USB Charger Coctor is one I use), which are incredibly useful.

I wouldn't worry about the 9V or 12V aspect if you get a normal USB charger.

Hope that helps,
Xerxes
