Update to FembotWiki's Category system

Post by Toastdroid » Tue Jul 08, 2025 1:03 pm

Hi! I thought I'd briefly come out of my posting lull to talk about some of the work I decided on a whim to do on FembotWiki's categories.

When Spaz took over the wiki, there was a bit of concerted effort to make some kind of tagging system to make stories and files easier to find, which resulted in there being categories for basic robot tropes, along with a decent amount of work being done to categorise stuff already on the wiki (though with how big FW's archive is, understandably this only resulted in a small proportion of stuff being categorised, due to there being no way to batch job things).

That was a few years ago, and categorisation has kinda been stagnant for a while, though people can now add categories themselves on upload which is very helpful. I looked at the list of categories we had and notice that there were a lot of duplicated or redundant categories (mostly synonyms, alternate spellings, or misspellings) and decided to merge as many of them together as I could. And then I spent the whole day expanding the categories as well. Whoops.

Here's all the new stuff that I got done:

-You might have used the TropeTags directory before, which holds all the "robotic trope" categories together for easy browsing; I've tidied it up, rolling some categories into related ones (accessible via drop downs), and I've added a bunch more categories, particularly more specific ones.

As well as this I've added some more category groups that work the same way:
- Secondary Topics is for categories that aren't necessarily robot-focussed, but still something that would be useful to search for, like for example if you wanted to search for stories with sex, or robots in lingerie, or a specific type of pairing.

- Robot Specialisations is for specific types or roles for robots, like nurses or maids, useful if you're looking for them.

- FInally, Locations is for specific locales, like if for example, you can't remember a story title, but knew it involved a junkyard or whatever, you could look here.

Obviously, most of these new categories are currently empty, and there are likely ones that are missing, I didn't try to be exaustive with these things, I just used what was already on the wiki and added anything else I could think of that would make a fair starting point, adding new categories, and categorising pages is another job, which brings me to...

How to categorise pages

Adding a category is simple, you just navigate to the page where you want it to be, hit edit, and add [[Category:example]] (replacing example with what you want, be careful, they're case sensitive!) somewhere to the page (most of the time they're listed at the bottom); if you type out or paste "[[Category:" without quotes and start typing what you want the editor will also display a dropdown of existing categories to pick. Any categories will appear as links at the bottom of the finished page, and you can even add categories to other categories to make subcategories (I will soon be very tired of typing "category" over and over).

How to add new categories

Making new categories is also quite easy, you can either try to add a category that doesn't exist using the method below and it will appear as a red link on the finished page, click it, and you can create the category from there.
You can also do this directly by either attempting to search for a category that doesn't exist (remember to use "Category:" at the start of it!), or just writing it out in the url bar and navigating it from there.

I'm currently still working on all this, so keep in mind that a lot of the categories are a work in progress (trying to tie everything to specific terminologies is complex!), and I'm also gradually going thru a couple stories every day or so to categorise. I don't know how long I'll keep this momentum but I think at the very least I've got a decent groundwork for others to build on.
