Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence

Post by Karel » Thu Sep 16, 2004 11:03 am

Strange how there's been little discussion of it so far. It's just had its North American premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival, and should be heading to rep and indie cinemas soon. For our purposes, its supposed to be even better than the original. Have any of our Japanese contributors seen it already?

It will be in select theatres in the states this Friday as part of test marketing for a wider North American release.

I skimmed through a Japanese bootleg of it a few weeks ago and would guess many here would not be interested in it at all. The focus seems to be on Bateau and the only fembot-type characters I saw while skimming were the ball-jointed gynoids (they look like action figures at life-sized scale, not terribly sexy unless you're into dolls). They seemed to be pretty but weakly made sex companions who later go crazy. There were a few scenes of the gynoids taking damage which may be of interest to some and an assembly scene (much like the first GitS), but I would guess there was only about 10 minutes total of footage featuring them, though I could be wrong.

What about Motoko Kusanagi? As best I could tell she was mostly just a voice Bateau heard and later took the body of a gynoid.

Overall, from what a could tell, it looks like a serious animation (much like the tone of the first GitS film) which is beautifully done. I plan on seeing it in theatre if it is shown here but I would not urge the average FC member to go unless they enjoyed the first film for more than just the few ASFR bits.
