Ghost in the Shell, Revisited

We all remember the feature release, I should think, based on the manga by the genius, Masamune Shirow. For those die hard fans out there, they will have been aware of the 26 episode series released in in the recent year called Ghost in the Shell: Standalone Complex. A superbly animated series following everyone's favorite gynoid Section 9 officer, Motoko Kusanagi, and all her partners (and Tachikomas) as they investigate their cases.

Well, I happened upon a link today that let me know that the series would finally be heading to DVD on June 27th in the US, as well as getting a run on Adult Swim on the the Cartoon Network later in the year. There's also the movie sequel in production, Ghost in the Shell: Innocence, which has already been optioned by Dreamworks for distribution in theaters in the US. So you may want to expect a resurgence of interest in Ghost in the Shell in mass media soon enough. Likely its exposure on the Cartoon Network and actually getting adverts on national TV for it's movie MAY achieve the sort of critical mass that shows like Trigun and Cowboy Bebop have achieved. Or perhaps the completely dreadful Dragonball Z. If any series needed recognition, it's Ghost in the Shell. Spread the word folks!

Ghost in the Shell - 2nd Gig
the second season of the TV series is now airing PPV in Japan.

Innocence will be in theaters throughout Japan in March. My Japanese
skills are not nearly up to the level of politcal intrigue and philosphy
that is standard fare for Masamune Shirow, but I'll probably cough up the
1800 yen ($16US) to see it anyway, it looks more Blade-Runner-y than
Blade Runner.

All of the episodes of the first season "Ghost in the Shell - Stand Alone Complex" are available fansubbed via file sharing, and knowing that they will be aired for free make me feel much less guilty... just hope
you get subtitles and not crappy dubbing like the original GiTS movie release about 5 years ago.

Ohhhh the first two episodes of 2nd Gig, (the second season of Standalone) are already fansubbed. As for the dubbing, you know, I've got mixed feelings on that. I kind of aspire towards voice acting, and there's a studio in my state that does a lot of the US dubs of imports from Japan. I think Evangelion may have been dubbed out there. M'not sure, but I seem to remember lots of english dubs in credits originating out in Wilmington NC.

It's always going to lose something in translation, true. Still, the dubbing wasn't ATROCIOUS. The woman voicing Motoko was a little stilted in places though. (IE, her explanation of how she feels when she's doing her dives in the bay to Batoh.) There's also traces of a slight southern US or midwestern US accent in her speech (See her talking about 'uuthers' in the elevator with Batoh in the conversation where she talks about how they'd have to return their robot bodies if they quit.)

Great FREAKIN maker I want to act for a living...
