When a film by a "first time director" receives a theatrical release, and is later released to DVD, very often you will see the director's previous unreleased short films included as "Special Features" on the DVD. I've seen this done many times: but the longer the previous films, the less likely they are to be included in this way. 25 minutes is kind of long to be included as a "Special Feature". And of course this method of distribution is dependant upon the director having a big hit later.

Just because nicedayinc is a special-effects/editing shop, doesn't mean they actually have work! Far from it: there are a lot of unemployed special-effects people. My impression, then, is that I.D. was made as a showpiece: "Hey, look at what we can do!" And I think that it's strikingly effective as such, based on that stunning image of the android walking around with the entire front part of her body opened up! But this might diminish its chances of it being immediately released: they may choose to keep it in reserve, for screenings in front of potential clients. The website and professional-looking IMDB entry are reasons to remain hopeful that this will not be so, however.
