I just recently stumbled across the TV Tropes Wiki, which documents various phenomenon which occur with respect to storytelling media: Common themes, poor writing, fourth-wall smashing, audience reactions, etc. It's surprisingly comprehensive, if a little unevenly edited.

At any rate, I decided to check for our favorite concept, and lo and behold:

While it's a little sparse with respect to TV and Western Film, it's head and shoulders above anything else I've seen on Anime and Videogame appearances.
