The Cybermen return to Doctor Who

Post by keraptis » Thu Nov 10, 2005 8:56 am

For all you Doctor Who fans out there, the BBC has released a publicity shot of the updated look for the Cybermen:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/doctorwho/

For those who don't know, the Cybermen (introduced in 1966) were the Borg before the Borg existed ... robot-like men who attack planets converting humans into more Cybermen. Though they appeared in over a dozen different episodes over the years, the conversion part was never emphasized much. The conversion process was shown up-close in only one episode I can recall, from the 1980s ... but it was a man being converted. :(

The TV series has never featured a female Cyberman, though they have hinted at the idea in comic strips and radio shows. They seem to be doing at least two Cybermen episodes this coming year, and one can only hope that we will see a Cyberbabe. And maybe even a regular babe getting turned into a Cyberbabe. :D

Thanks for the pic Keraptis, yes they look very impressive and cyber like in their new design,I could definitely get jealous! Certainly in early episodes no sign of conversion was ever shown, and I must admit by the 80's I was working on Saturdays so I didnt get to see them in that era.

Certainly think a Cyberwoman an excellent idea myself.even just a slight chance I might enjoy the process myself! Lets hope we get our wish in the new series to see a cyber female.
I'm just a 'girl' who wants to become a fembot whats wrong with that?

Though not visual, Big Finish Productions have been doing a four-part Cyberman audio drama, which features several androids. It involves a conflict between the humans of Earth, and the androids which were exiled to the Orion system when they wanted freedom.

The drama is playing out similarly to Battlestar Galactica.

I assume you are referring to these?

I'm curious, are any of the androids in those stories female?

That'd be the one, and yes. There are fembots. They're played as human, though. As in, robot nature mentioned, not really dealt with.

Two other Big Finish audios I'm aware of also featured fembots: Sword of Orion and The Genocide Machine. Neither is really dealt with in-depth.

Hi folks, a little more news about the Cybermen, including production stills and spoilers:

http://www.gallifreyone.com/cgi-bin/vie ... pl=newsrss

Of particular interest is that the episode appears to play up the transformation angle quite a bit. At least one scene shows a street full of ordinary people wearing "Cyber-headgear" that freezes them in their tracks when switched on. I can only assume/hope that some of the extras used in this scene are attractive young women and that the camera focuses on them a bit. No indication though that the episode places any emphasis on a full female transformation. All of the actors in the Cyber-suits are clearly male.

Stay tuned ...
