New Actroid?
Here's a curious little item i found at the home page for the Actroid. It seems to indicate a new model of Actroid called "DER". (Possibly a massed produced model?) I can't find any english translation for this particular item so any translation would be greatly appreciated. There's a image of it too......it looks quite nice!

My Japanese has been getting better, here is a translation of the new Actroid blurb, this is a first draft so the content is 95% accurate -but there's only a 70% chance of that
and the style could probably use a going-over.
No mention of walking ability, I expect it is the standard model, moving arms, head and torso, mounted on stationary legs. Most of the language is vague.
START MEDIOCRE TRANSLATION
As now on display at the World Expo in Nagoya
The debut of an event-oriented rental robot with improved general-use ability, the Actroid-DER.
We have made a humanoid robot (Actroid) with overwhelming realism and superb facial expressiveness that looks completely human.
On top of the high-efficeincy multi-purpose original, we have added even
more charming facial expressions and naturalism that matches a human.
Its smooth gestures make for a realistic performance.
It has tremendous eye-catching power and will be the topic of all conversations.
It can give fluent narration in the role of emcee or "companion".
END TRANSLATION
(translation note: don't get excited, in Japanese "companion" has a secondary meaning of "person who greets guests at a convention")
Side note, although I live in Japan, a trip to the World Expo near Nagoya would be very expensive and time consuming, and from what I've heard, both crowded and boring.. I expect to be able to see the Actroid at some other opportunity which may pop up in the big city someday, and for free.

Hmm,
Just paging through the site I found a press release in English
http://www.kokoro-dreams.co.jp/ng/actro ... nglish.pdf
It seems they are going to be mass-producing the actroid.

I have to agree Robotman, she is definitely very cute to look at.Suspect the 'honeymoon night' might be a bit of a let down though as I doubt they have concerned themselves with that side of the Actroids life as yet! I also suspect her conversational skills aren't yet up to a lifetime together at present, and of course as far as I can see she remains in her booth and is unable to walk at present.robotman wrote:Wow!![]()

That really makes you wonder how soon something like that can be made into a sex doll.
I wonder how an actroid would respond to the question "Will you marry me?"
Having said all that I suspect in a very short time her 'vocabulary' will be greatly enhanced, and though she wont be a great conversationalist for a few years yet,I suspect it wont take long for her to be as intelligent (or more than) some of the human 'bimbos' that are about.I suspect she's close to that point already!
Movement might be more of a challenge for a true companion, though for a 'sex doll' less vital of course, and might take a while to perfect but at this rate of progress,we may be only talking a handful of years or so.
I'm sure redesigning the body with breasts and genitals wouldnt be too difficult for a sex doll, the challenge would be 'strengthening' the body to take a mans weight moving around on top of her while not removing the 'human feel' to her body.Clearly the 'seal' to seperate her genitals from her circuitry would have to be strong as I suspect 'human fluids' might damage her circuitry somewhat!
An Actroid as a sex doll, well I would think no more than a couple of years in all honesty, but who will be able to afford them given the cost of Real Dolls, and this is a massive step up on them.Practically in 20 years time I suspect all 'sex dolls' will come with features as good as or advanced of where the Actroid is today at an everyday cost to purchasers, much like the standard sex dolls of today.
I'm just a 'girl' who wants to become a fembot whats wrong with that?

The actroid is a research project at Osaka University, and I'd bet that a university will not sponsor sex doll research. However, if the Actroid is profitable, then I expect Kokoro Co. would keep trying to make more and more realistic actroids. Also wonder if the Japanese companies that make (and probably sell many) realdolls at $6000 each are contacing this research team.
Still, the main problem is she's powered by an external source, and can't move. While the current actroid is stuck in a booth (to keep prying hands away) with compressors, computers and tubes outside her body...I'd guess that a non-mobile sex-doll-on-a-bed would be very possible even today, with compressors in the bed frame and a tether leading to the actroid's back to power it. But I don't think it could take... well... "rough handling". Plus the requirement of a staff of professors and grad students to keep it running... I guess a bit like Westworld, eh?
