Wanted: Anime show

I remember back in the mid 90's when I was still a little kid, my brothers and I would all watch Saturday morning cartoons and one of them caught my eye even back then. I do not know the name of it, and that is what I want.

Basically, from what I remember, some guy gets an android companion who stays with him his whole life until it shows him sitting on his porch as an old man and she is standing several hundred feet away, looking heavily degraded before finally exploding.

I hope this is enough for someone to go off of.
