Nice tip.

Knowing my luck though I would probably get distracted by something and forget to unplug the flash drive

Something I do quite often is to use Winzip to create password protected files to contain movies stories etc. I'm not sure how hard they are to crack but I know my wife would never figure it out. It's not that she couldn't, she just has no patients with computers. If it can't be done in 30 seconds she gets bored and just gets me to do it for her.

I'm like the IT guy on Saturday night live. "MOVE"!

Time to go scrub my history now :)

WOW !! Rarely have I visited the "Off Topic" tread and I've been here a long time. This however is a great topic. I need to know as much about this software and other virtual machine type software as possible. Can I use this on a computer say, someone else's that already hosts a windows operating system? An entire computer on a thumb drive so-to-speak? Any here have any experience with VM Ware and the "free" virtual machine Microsoft offers?

An other tip to hide things on computer : use the open source software truecrypt (http://www.truecrypt.org/). It create an encrypted drive. You can put all your asfr stuff on this drive.

But this will not hide your web history, the solution with firefox is to create a second profile. If you launch firefox with the command 'firefox -profilemanager' (without quotes) you will be able to create a second profile, and if you specify that the data of this second profile is on the encrypted drive, nobody can see what you have done.

NB: to launch firefox in this way, create a shortcut or use a command line.

Warning : by default, it's the last profile which will be used (not a real problem if you use truecrypt)

A virtual desktop manager that lets you switch desktops with a keystroke is handy too if you're worried about someone wandering into the room without warning. I use Virtual Dimension, though I'm not fond of it. (Some video cards have them built in, too.) I can press an obscure key combo, and poof - all that's on my screen is my mail client, firefox on an innocent web page, and a paused computer game. It won't hide anything from a determined search for it, but it neatly avoids the "why did you turn off the monitor when I walked into the room?" question.

It's easy enough too, if you grab a copy of Microsoft Virtual PC and install a guest operating system into it - and then set the drive to not save state past that point. You have a working OS, faster than a live CD, that erases everything whenever the host environment closes it down.

I've been fortunate enough to own and be the sole user of the computer that I look up ASFR stuff on. For windows users on shared machines though, there are a couple of programs that might help. First...

Truecrypt is a good utility for hiding the evidence of what you're doing (not being seen is another matter, sorry) :D Once you install it, you can use it to set up a file on your hard disk, USB drive, etc. Truecrypt lets Windows see the encrypted file like another removable disk and anything written to it is automatically encrypted so even if your roomie finds the file/drive, it's all scrambled. The only down-side so far is that you can't use this if you're logged in as a "guest" account, but most people using Windows have admin rights by default anyway.

Once you've got that set up, use Portable Firefox to keep everything together. Firefox is an excellent browser and having the portable version installed onto a Truecrypt drive makes sure that all of your logs, cookies, history, etc, are kept there where they're safe and encrypted.

Since no evidence exists outside of the Truecrypt volume, all you have to do is unmount it and remove it. Even if you forget to do that, whoever finds it will need your password to get into the drive so your ASFR stuff remains hidden.

Of course, this doesn't stop people from sniffing the line between your computer and FC, or recording stuff in memory while you're reading it but we don't wanna get TOO paranoid, do we? ;) Here are those links again:

An alternative viewpoint

Or you could just "come out" to people you know and/or not make such a big deal about it. That is, unless you find it erotic or exciting to hide it.

So far the only response I've received is to explain further the nuances of my particular fetish. I have found it refreshing to not be my "elephant in the room". I still think it's a big deal for some people, but for those I'm close to, it's merely a curiosity: a facet of myself they haven't considered before.

My immediate family doesn't want to know much of what I do anyway and I decided that I don't need to force them to face things that might bother them. C'est la vie.
May your deeds return to you tenfold,
