As I understand it you pretty much have to have the persons' or their estates' permission to use their likenesses. This applies to advertisements and similar media so it would certainly apply to using their likenesses as sex dolls. Popular actresses and models would be natural choices. It would take a lawyer to figure out whether one could safely make a sex doll of someone long dead like Lily Langtree or someone whose likeness is lost like Emily Morgan (the Yellow Rose of Texas). If somebody has a photo of his own great-grandmother who looked really good maybe he'd have to settle with cousins he doesn't even know.

Ok, this just got really weird. Anyway, 3-D printing should solve that problem because enough money can get someone just about anything, and what someone don't know won't hurt her.

The black-market 3d face-printing company will bundle a celebrity face with a voice package to match. Any star t.v. actress or newscaster will have recorded so many hours of audio for such a purpose. Fembots from movie stars can say their catch phrases an if thinking they've never said those lines before.

The big-deal, legit android company would have to choose to actively make it hard for anyone to modify the bot. I think the erotic motivation to get your bot modified is going to outweigh the difficulty. We seem to like laws which allow us to modify devices we own, except weapons. The guy today, working out of his downtown apartment, who will repair your broken smartphone outside of warranty, is going to have a lot of customers.

In time, some estates, some living celebrities will license their likenesses. They won't be the faces people want the most, but those first "real" faces will break the ice. Then I bet entrepreneurs will hack a 3rd party solution.

Probably some aspiring actresses will license their likenesses, most to the detriment of their careers, and so will some porn stars who wouldn't expect achievements beyond their niche (so to speak).

I imagine the lower end android companies will be able to compete with the higher end ones by making theirs easier to "modify," "fix," or order a "replacement face" (*nudge; wink) although they wouldn't directly produce the knock-offs, at least not under their real company name. Even if their products are initially inferior the appeal to "secretly" or unofficially customize and the lower price would be the driving force. It's like how the lower end dvd players came to directly compete with companies like Sony by making theirs able to play most formats and for a lot cheaper, thus, bringing the price down all around. Ain't capitalism grand?
