The correct HTML to clear horizontal space using HTML and CSS should be actually
But the problem seems to lie in the way wikimedia is rendering the shortcode {{clear}} wrong and unfortunately I don't know wikimedia very well. Perhaps you can try hardcoding the correct "clear" html/css I posted above and see if it works?

The fast and dirty way of fixing this is to change the templates' file, putting directly (as aranae said)
in place of the original code.
If you're lucky you can do it accessing the wikimedia admin panel, if not there is always the ftp access. If you need help on doing this pm me.
