As for myself, they are a turn on to the extent they resemble real women. The more they do, right down to smelling like flesh and hair, the more of a turn on they are.

I believe there are two broad categories of persons here, those who are turned on because androids are machines and those who are interested in them as a substitute for actual people.

Hmm, nice. I can name just about all of them.

But why is the bald chick from the Star Trek movie in there? I don't think of her as a robot at all ... IMHO merging with V-Ger or whatever doesn't count.

Argh! Sorry - I'm not trying to take this off topic but this is bugging me. There's a few from that pic that I can't figure out. Let me get this right (loosely from top to bottom, left to right...)
The Borg Queen.
Donna Matrix from Spaceballs.
Urm...nope, don't know grey-skinned girl.
No - don't know smiling maid-ish girl.
Robo CHIC.
Cherry 2000.
Don't know giant smurfette.
The Queen from Westworld (?).
A fembot from Austin Powers.
The pleasure droid from Minority Report.
Galatea from Bicentenial Man.
Maria from I love Maira.
Pris from Bladerunner.
Galaxina.
Dunno ugly skull head robot (sorry for the 'ugly' bit, ugly skull head girl).
TX from Terminator 3.
Llia from Star Trek.
The robot (Maria?) from Metropolis.
Maria (?) from the animated Metropolis.
Cal from Alien 4 (?).

Anyone know who the fembots I ain't got are?
That pic is totally awesome, BTW! Is 'Eduardo PM' still around? Did he do any other stuff?
And I remember 'Bones' calling Llia's copy a 'mechanism' at one point. Does that make her count?
As for the original question...
It DOES seem a pretty broad request. But there are a few discussion threads that have covered this. Have a look around and I'm sure you'll get a feel for what the appeal is. Or is there a more specific reason you're asking?

Grey Skinned one is from Phantoma-something.
Smurfette is Caterina from "Io e Caterina)
The Queen is the doll from Felini's Casanova
Skull robot is from the Animatrix

Thanks! I still haven't seen Jason X.
Oh, and I realised I meant 'The pleasure droid from AI' not 'Minority Report'.

That's a pretty loaded question! I had actually written a five page paper on it once and still did not cover everything :D I'll try to sum some things up, though. It really does vary from person to person just about as much as any other fetish and that is the first point I would like to make. Most other fetishes can also be incorporated into this one since gynoids can be realistic and can even be built with other attributes. (Angel or devilgirl fetish, super strength, furries, alien, hentai features, etc.)

*Appearance and Character. An android (we focus on fembots/gynoids here) can look like any dream partner and/or is almost completely customizable in appearance and could be programmed to do anything that it would be physically possible to do. Basically, ALMOST ANY FANTASY you have can be acted out with a fembot. An old example of this in movies would be Westworld. This brings my second point.

*Freedom. Because they can be programmed and don't have human biases (unless programmed to), you are free to touch, play, say, indulge, experiment, etc. without any worry of being judged. Also it doesn't matter how old you are, what size you are, if you are handicapped or ugly or if you are a total asshole. This brings another point

*Loyalty. The only way your dream partner would ever leave you or betray you is either by a major malfunction, being hacked, abduction, or destruction (or if you can't make the payments!)

*No STDs

*No emotional baggage or family/friend conflicts (unless they are your own)

*No injury or illness that can't be REPAIRED (and that would be nice to watch anyway)

*No appearance of aging

*No unplanned pregnancy

*No hygiene issues (and if that's your fetish then this one isn't for you)

I know that doesn't cover everything at all, but I hope it helps a little. As far as being attracted to blinking lights and internal circuits, that would need other explanations. Maybe it offers some kind of subconscious reassurance to us that the target of our desire is something that can someday be attainable even though it's only fantasy right now.

What turns someone on really varies from person to person. Even in a group like this there is a very wide variety of tastes and preferences. For instance, I only like the robot idea for roleplaying (with a real woman). Others might be genuinely turned on by the idea of a realistic female android designed to be the 'perfect' partner or a more stylistic or metallic representation of a feminine machine. And others still are turned on by the idea of 'being' or 'becoming' or simply pretending to be a robot. As you can see, it really does depend on who you are!

But if you're wondering about someone specific, your best bet is to just ask them because all we can tell you is how we feel about it ourselves.

Hope that helps!
