New Fembot Symbols

Post by dale coba » Sat Dec 06, 2014 10:12 pm

Working on the collars, I designed two symbols.

Image
Woman Power - Venus around [a vertical line in a circle],
like the [On/Off] button on electronic devices.

Image
Venus USB3.0 - Providing full access through each of three kinds of ports.

That first one is giving me a bit of a Bill Cipher vibe.

Just an idea here, how about replacing he stripe within the symbol with the universal power button symbol?

That's not a power button but a standby button. The "on/off" symbol has the line fully inside the circle, the "on/standby" symbol has it over the open border.

I was working in a low-resolution medium, poking holes in foil. On screen, there are better approaches to consider.

N6688, this version has strengths. It's far from an instant communication for most to interpret, but I think the meaning would sink in. Perhaps the symbol should be smaller still, relative to the Venus circle surrounding; that would make the eye quickly consider the symbol as one, separate object within the Venus circle.
Image
My problem was, inside the circle of the light-up collar, you get a circle around a circle around a broken circle. That's a bigger problem as the t-stem shrinks, and the outer circle approaches the radius of the total circle disk.

Some color variations:

Perhaps there is a way to imply labia and clitoris?

TheRealMaestro, you are right about Mercury, and how that would have meant something else. Anyone here who wants a Mercury/Venus, Love/hermaphrodite symbol, please make it yours.

Other options for the USB:
This version uses the more fluid lines of the proper icon.
(The rounded lines didn't read clean, as poked holes in foil)

The USB part is most recognizable with the bottom circle intact,
but preserving that made the rest too small for my collar.

I was actualy thinking more around the lines of this: http://www.fembotwiki.com/index.php?tit ... button.png
This way the power button symbol and the female symbol are one.

I actualy thought it was the same thing, thanks for correcting me darkbutflashy

ps
If robotman or any other of the admins of the wiki reads this you may delete the symbol after dale sees it.

N6688,

The standby + Venus is confusing. The standby part is not immediately recognized with the modification of an upside-down cross added beneath. My eye tries to read it as three things: the cross, the circle and... wait, that's sort of part of the second thing. A person could miss the Venus entirely.

Ok, we now have a fembot symbol on the wiki. It's a transparent PNG suitable for bumpmapping it on anything.

EDIT: Dale, I don't think it's confusing so much. The standby symbol is widely known, thanks to the smartphones.

Darkbutflashy,

Strictly speaking, you are right. I feel that the best symbols are interpreted instantly, or a half instant after that. I try to apply an eye clumsier than my own when I consider a new symbol. What I'm saying is, it's not as far from "idiot-proof" as I like an icon to be.

Perhaps my issues would be alleviated by changing the proportions:
- the thickness of the lines
- the ratio of the diameter of the circle to the height of the cross
- the height of the crossbar
- the length of the crossbar with respect to the diameter of the circle

I think there's a better balance to be tweaked out of that version.

I wonder if there's any way we can introduce these to a wider audience, and see if they catch on.

And for the ones like me, who like their machine females being real people, I did another symbol for mechanized women in general. Again, a transparent PNG suitable for bumpmapping it on anything.

So I know the original intention was not this, but oh, wow, would this make a good symbol for third wave (techno)feminism

Woman power!

Maybe this could be an offering to the media gods - "See, we're not misogynists. We believe in woman power, and women who want power buttons." :)

Miss Pris, I'd offer it to the techno-feminists, but
Would it appeal to the non-TFs they wanted to court?

To outsiders, would this symbolic power suggest empowering political power,
or remind them of objectifying electricity used to control a device?

All true cyborg feminists would agree, empowerment comes from installing and owning your own batteries.
