Stepford Update
Stick a fork in it - it's done.
A classic will be trashed.
While surfing, I came across the following at movies.com:
01/17/03
Roger Bart, currently playing Leo Bloom in Broadway's The Producers,
has signed on for a role as a gay confidant of Nicole Kidman's
character. "I play this rather mincing fellow who comes to the
community, gets fixed, and becomes quite the poncho-wearing,
beer-guzzling soccer dad," Bart says. "It's very funny and allows me
a great opportunity to play a rather extreme version of the same
person in the movie." (Variety)
They just don't get it.
Might as well paint a mustache on the Mona Lisa!

The further along this film gets into production, the more dissapointed a become. I can't stand the thought of turning this classic into some screwball comedy. The tone of the original is going to be completely lost.
The best we might hope for is a couple of well done scenes using state of the art CGI. As a whole, however, this film will likely be a piece of crap by ASFR standards.

Some more details
Found this on.... well, I've forgotten.
Country singer Faith Hill is joining Nicole Kidman in the rapidly-expanding cast of the remake of The Stepford Wives, which is due to begin filming in June.
The dark comedy, about a woman who moves into a neighbourhood where husbands have transformed their wives into robots designed to cater to them, was first filmed in 1975 and is based on Ira Levin's novel of the same name.
Oscar-nominated Catch Me If You Can star Christopher Walken and Oscar-winner Glenn Close are to play the civic leaders of Stepford while John and Joan cusack have also joined the cast, playing residents of the town, reports Daily Variety.

Found this at Z Review:
>Wednesday 12th March 2003: The Stepford Wives Update:
Christopher Walken and Glenn Close are in talks to join the Frank
Oz-directed remake of The Stepford Wives. Walken and Close are being lied up
to play the town leaders of Stepford.<
Walken might bring a little perverse humor - but Glenn Close? If her role is human, that's one thing; if she's supposed to be a gynoid, well........
I'm getting that queasy feeling AGAIN............
I hope I'm wrong........

Some roles clarified
The IMDb reports that Faith Hill will play the role of Charmaine - portrayed by Tina Louise in the original. Christopher Walken will play Dale Coba - not a surprise, really. And Glenn Close will be Dr. Emily Francher. Biiig deal. In the original this character was on screen for about 5 minutes as Joanna's shrink. At least she's not taking up one of the 'babe' roles.

Cusack siblings out.....
Just saw this at cinescape.com.....
Citing undisclosed personal reasons, siblings John and Joan Cusack have exited Paramount's remake of THE STEPFORD WIVES. The studio is moving fast to recast the parts, with Matthew Broderick in talks to play the part of Nicole Kidman's husband and Bette Midler as Kidman's confidant and friend in the film.
The other previously announced cast members, Christopher Walken, Glenn Close, Roger Bart, Faith Hill and Mike White, remain onboard.

Stepford script review...
I found this link on darkhorizons.com
It's a review of the up-coming stepford script, with some frustratingly evasive spoilers...
http://www.tnmc.org/dp/0520031.shtml
I REALLY want to know if the wives are transformed or replaced. I recall a press release saying there would be effects shots of the womens' tranformations. Personally I really hope that actually means shots of the replacements being built.....but I doubt it.

Re: Stepford script review...
Well, according to that review the film has a happy ending for everyone involved. Can a dead and replaced wife be happy? I don't put much stock in these early reviews, but if this one is accurate......two thumbs down.fection wrote:I REALLY want to know if the wives are transformed or replaced. One more tidbit
"Because Stepford is a town in which the wives have been surreptitiously replaced by beautiful robots, the extras include about 100 tall, slim, attractive women.
"There are a lot of gorgeous women here - the extras who are playing Stepford Wives," said Robertson."
http://www.zwire.com/site/news.cfm?news ... 6414&rfi=6
------------------
Personally I think those dissing the movie's promise are taking it much too seriously. How many really cool phantansies have had a commedy theme. Also, the original Stepford Wives weren't particularly good looking. The new Stepford Wives will be. The new version will be much more explicit about what is going on.
Sure, there will be flawed scenes but it sounds like there will be a lot to love - which is about as much as any Hollywood movie could offer.

Re: One more tidbit
After seeing the updated cast list on the imdb I have to agree...in part. No doubt the women will all be beautiful, and no matter how the movie plays out I'll be buying the dvd. With the list of actresses given so far they had BETTER be more explicit about what's going on. Otherwise, they're just wasting....talent. Yeah, that's it. Talent. And that's all I want out of this film...lots and lots of grabby handfuls of talent.Svengli wrote: Personally I think those dissing the movie's promise are taking it much too seriously. But I must disagree about the original Stepford gang. Take away the outdated outfits and hairstyles, glitz them up like they do nowadays and you've got beatiful women. A few, anyway. Many of them were models in their own time, some were actresses in commercials. Imagine, Marilyn Chambers as a Stepford Wife! That would've been something to see. But anyway, I would stack up (how's that for an appropriate term) Barbara Rucker, Judith Baldwin, Tina Louise, et al. against today's crop of beauties anytime. The problem with the original Stepford was the lack of exposure...of talent. Yeah, that's it.
I signed up for the Imdb's Pro version expecting some sort of extra content. Bleh. Haven't found any use for it so far. So, if you're looking for breaking news on Stepford via that route, don't bother.

No breaking news, just thought I'd say that things are looking up for Stepford, in my opinion. Like Svengli said, it can't be all that bad if it has beautiful female robots, right? A news article I read today mentioned a Stepford Spa with an army of wives driving SUVs and wearing mini-skirts. The company doing the special effects has a website at tippett.com Nothing there now, but they do at least mention that they are doing the work.
