asking about car lubrication oil - viscosity/stickiness

Postby liliwinnt6 » Sun Oct 21, 2018 12:24 am

when there are two kinds of 5w-30 oil being conventional and fully synthetic,
does the synthetic oil provide the same lubrication and protection to the engine but with less viscosity/stickiness compared to the conventional oil?

So please note that I'm not a mechanic, nor a chemical engineer, so take this info with a grain of salt.

They should both be the same viscosity (as they are both 5W30). I've been told that the synthetic should last longer in terms of how long you can leave it in the engine (5k or 10k vs 3k). However, synthetic (I've been told) is "slipperier", which means that if you're burning oil when driving, using synthetic will burn faster. I've personally experienced this on my car, as it's rather old, and is now burning oil.

I hope that helps.

I'm not much of a gear head but I seem to remember that mixing synthetic and conventional oil can cause foaming in the engine and you don't want that.
Play it safe. Get your oil and filter changed with what ever oil your owners manual calls for.
Happy motoring.
