R.I.P. Harlan Ellison

Postby tectile » Fri Jun 29, 2018 3:33 pm

Harlan Ellison dies at age 84.
If the name isn't familiar, you will recognize his work if you're a science fiction fan.
Do yourself a favor and check out his body of work.
I recommend reading his short story collections to start. His novels can be a bit hard to get through.

He wrote a story that would be of interest to this group. If I remember correctly,
It was called Helean Bernoux about a beautiful android created by dark forces to seduce and corrupt powerful and influential men.

I haven't been able to track it down yet but I know it was in one of his story collections.

I missed out on meeting Ellison a little over a decade ago as a good friend of mine, knew him well and there was a chance he'd be around when I visited my buddy, but it never happened. I heard he wasn't doing too well for a while now. RIP.

Found it.

The story is called “The Face of Helene Bournouw”.

It can be found in the collection "Deathbird stories".

Oh my god!
I just found out by reading this!
I am so sad now!
"I Have No Mouth but I Must Scream" was one of the first science fiction stories I ever read as a child (that, and Bradbury's "The Veldt")
Ellison and a small handful of others are why I love sci-fi, and probably why I love science AND writing! (Both of which I kinda/sorta do professionally, so - life path and all...)
84 years was not enough time to have had him with us. :(
