IMDb to close "message boards" on February 20, 2017

Post by tmc_6882 » Mon Feb 06, 2017 6:41 pm

http://www.imdb.com/board/announcement
IMDb is the world’s most popular and authoritative source for movie, TV and celebrity content. As part of our ongoing effort to continually evaluate and enhance the customer experience on IMDb, we have decided to disable IMDb’s message boards on February 20, 2017. This includes the Private Message system. After in-depth discussion and examination, we have concluded that IMDb’s message boards are no longer providing a positive, useful experience for the vast majority of our more than 250 million monthly users worldwide. The decision to retire a long-standing feature was made only after careful consideration and was based on data and traffic.

The Movie Database (TMDb) (About) added yesterday (February 5th) Discussions functionality for each title (movie/TV show).

You will find it in top left of the page next to poster under Discussions button with Bubble icon, so feel free leave IMDb which abandoned users and plan to delete their content.
    Sample of dicussions:
    The Shawshank Redemption main page
    The Shawshank Redemption discussions

You can return back to movie page by clicking on name of movie. Discussions have two categories - General, for general topics regarding movie, Content issues is self explanatory regarding content on main page.
Link to discussions from mobile browsers (even if you request desktop website) is currently NOT available, should be rolled out on Monday 6th according the admin's (Travis Bell) words. As temporary solution you can add "discuss" in the end of mobile URL.

Of course currently because TMDb just rolled out this feature, the discussions are pretty dead and wait for you to transfer there your favorite threads and start discussing.

I haven't gotten a satisfactory answer, so I'm hoping someone might be in the know here.

Do they intend to purge the entire history of the boards, or just shut down any future posts but allow what has not been removed by moderators to stand?

Apparently, they're going to purge the entire history of the boards. Based on the stories online the most likely reason(s) seems to be:
    • The community has been inundated with trolls and the like that have turned many topics into toxic cesspools. Trying to keep up with moderation also takes time and money.

Traffic is much higher on their social media accounts (Facebook, Twitter, etc).

The design hasn't changed much since 1998 and is simply outdated and a chore to navigate for newer (younger) users.
There's right now, an effort to save ALL of IMDb, including message boards/threads.

You can find more information as it becomes available at http://archiveteam.org/index.php?title= ... e_Database

There is a group trying to start a separate platform.

They currently have a website: http://www.moviepanels.com/

If you're interested they're allowing people to sign up now and secure their SN. If you don't feel comfortable giving them your email address I'd just bookmark the website and wait to see what comes out of it.

Thank you so much, tmc_6882 for the information on all of the alternative message boards for (cinema/television) movies and sitcoms. ( :notworthy: :applause: ) True, I will miss IMDB very much, but that will mostly be their loss, not mine. IMDB used to be cool, now just about everybody thinks that they're just full of it.
