Is this site "crashy"? Or is it my POS computer?

Post by andoroido » Fri Oct 04, 2002 7:15 am

I don't want to complain about this great forum,
I just want to see if it's just my crappy computer
with Win 98SE (stable as the San Andreas Fault)
and IE 5.0 (should I think about upgrading?)

Every time a try to access this particular site or click a link here
there's about a 1 in 4 chance that my IE crashes,
and I have to restart IE, nothing major, just annoying.

Of course this site is great, so I just keep trying until it works.
(Please take that as the ultimate compliment! noidguy, href, et al.)

Just wondering if anyone else has the same problem?
Or any ideas why I might be having this problem?

I've had problems with my browser crashing on other sites, but never on this one. If anyone else is experiencing similar problems please let us know.

My current rig runs Windows XP/ IE 4.5 (Professional) with nary a glitch - although sometimes the new post indicators don't show up. If the browser is slow to load in general (any particular page) - and crashes frequently - it's time to upgrade on your end (this happened to me frequently with my old "POS" as well). Two ways you can go, depending on your budget (and the condition of your current computer): a cheap 10-gig "booster pack" for your hard drive ($30 - $100, depending on age, make, and model); or bite the bullet, and shell out several C-notes for a whole new rig (most of which come with at least 30-50 gigs of memory space as standard!). Don't be too concerned about the hook-up (56k modem vs. DSL vs. cable) - the new 'puters do just fine with the 56k - the memory available is the weak link...............

I made the switch from an "old" 20-meg system to a new 40-gig system last year - night and day is a gross understatement!! It's like swapping your old Schwinn for a new Harley :P
Assemble the ladies? I didn't know that they were broken......

I have win 98, XP pro and linux with Netscape and Opera handling the web browsing and have had no problem at all with this site.
I don't use IE though. You mite want to try switching to Opera. It's fast and free too.

Well, aside from Win98SE being unstable (although when I used to run it, it wasn't that unstable), you might want to try upgrading IE. The new version is 6.0 and that might help a bit. Also try Firefox before you shell out money.

From what I remember Opera isn't free, it allows you to keep using it but it has little pop-ups that can get annoying (from memory of a long time ago, so I could be wrong).

Baron, you could you clarify what you mean about the hardware? I've never hear of a booster pack for computers. If you mean RAM, then it might help, but that's only if the RAM in the current computer is incredibly low. If you mean HD space, I don't see how hard drive space will increase stability.

Dude. This is a three-year-dead thread with spam attached to the end of it.

checkproxy.com spams bulletin boards like that.

Lots of people are falling for it all over. No need to feel dumb.
