The other day Ami told me she has dreams when she goes in for servicing. I thought the whole thing was absurd in that robots-can't-dream sort of way. After all, she's a robot, and robots can't have dreams, not even of electric sheep. Boy, how wrong I was. It turns out that whenever she's shut down for servicing, she isn't completely deactivated. Her brain actually goes into a reduced power mode to keep her subroutines from corrupting. While it's powered down, she can still feel things, like the technicians who probe or (if they're unethical) fondle her. "Ghost hands," she calls it, that fade in and out of her senses.
